Mysterium Network is a decentralized, open-source Virtual Private Network (VPN) headquartered in Vilnius, Lithuania. It was initially proposed in December 2016 by Robertas Visinskis on the Bitcointalk forums.
Visinskis has quoted his motive for creating this network in Forbes, stating the following:[1]
"According to a World Economic Forum study released earlier this month, cyber attacks are now seen as one of the biggest threats to doing business. With this number on the rise, it is imperative that cybersecurity is strengthened, and I believe we will see increased scrutiny on security solutions for fintech companies. Crowdsale
MYST is a digital cryptocurrency that was sold in an online Crowdfunding event that took place in May 2017 where users of the Ethereum Network were permitted to trade their Ether (ETH) in exchange for MYST tokens to fund the project. The MYST token was built on the Ethereum Network's ERC-20 token standard with a total of 32,433,366 MYST tokens possible.[2]
Software
After the crowdfunding event, development began on GitHub in August 2017 offering the progress made on the decentralized VPN software to an open source development community.[3]
Client Application
An initial release of the software supporting Linux distributions and macOS was pushed to Github on July 5, 2018 under the development name of 'Mysterion' v0.0.1 in reference to Kenny's alter ego Mysterion in the show South Park. Since this release there have been several others leading up to the current Mysterium VPN client release v0.6.0 on Github.

The initial release allowed for users to download a free VPN client that would route traffic through user hosted nodes around the world. This service, dubbed dVPN which is short for decentralized virtual private network, allowed users to rest on the assurance that their internet traffic was effectively secured through the end-to-end encryption present in the core software. This differs from the traditional model for a VPN involved a corporation acting as a middleman for internet traffic routed through their servers and IP addresses.
The decentralized VPN model has been developed to support OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols as of February 2019[4] which give end users a choice between the two protocols for securing their internet traffic from potential attacks such as the man in the middle attack which would allow a VPN provider theoretically to intercept and record traffic from their users following the orders of a government or third party subpoena requesting data on an individual user. This concern became greater amongst the European online populace following the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) implemented by the European Union on May 25th, 2018 where Mysterium Network's solution gained coverage by NASDAQ[5] following widespread international concern about internet companies subsequent compliance with this regulatory action.
Node Hosting Platform
On July 13th, 2018 following the release of the v0.0.1 Mysterion Client, a guide was posted to Medium regarding how users could leverage their own personal computers as well as cloud computing instances to host nodes that would mask other user's internet traffic as part of an alpha product testing phase for the platform. Node hosts could deploy their node instance and then monitor the traffic of said instance through an online portal provided on Mysterium Network's testnet website

Mysterium Network allowed anyone from this point onwards to rent their unused Network traffic, while providing a secure connection for those in need at this point in time allowing a bootstrapped approach that utilized Docker to allow a node to be initialized in two terminal commands by users on Linux, Windows, and macOS machines with Docker's command-line interface installed.
This approach to node hosting mimics that of the Tor Network where users provide hosting for the exit nodes which therefore mask other network user's IP Addresses, however Mysterium Network's approach retains use of traditional client-server VPN protocols found in other competing software instead of acting as an overlay network providing internet traffic relay . OpenVPN was the initial protocol offering in Mysterium, while the integration of the newer Wireguard protocol later on allowed users greater security and further prevented node hosts from keeping logs on users.
