The N.E. Heartbreak Tour was a concert tour by the R&B/pop group, New Edition which launched in September 1988 in North America[1] to promote the groups fourth studio album, Heart Break. The opening acts would be Al B. Sure! who was promoting his album, In Effect Mode, and Bobby Brown with his album, "Don't Be Cruel". The tour continued through the rest of 1988 until January 8, 1989, in Sao Paulo. After that in 1989, the tour would change its name and headliner for the remainder of the tour. Brown became the headliner and the tour was now named the Don't Be Cruel Tour which launched in late January 1989 in North America and lasted til June 1990 in Australia.[2]
History and background[edit]
In late 1985, Brown was voted out of the group, New Edition after multiple complaints about his act from managers of the group.[3] However in 1986, MCA Records gave Brown a side deal to record his own studio album, which came out to be his debut studio album, King of Stage. In 1987, there were rumors of lead singer, Ralph Tresvant, leaving the group and getting his own solo deal, so the other members of the group went out and found singer, Johnny Gill to take his place and also give the group a more mature sound to get rid of their bubblegum pop image. Once, Ralph made it clear that he was in-fact not leaving the group, the group returned to 5 members and they went on to record their latest album.[4]
In 1987, Brown got another deal from MCA to record his second album, which they gave Brown more control over the sound of the album and the choice to pick the producers for his album. On June 20, 1988, both Heart Break and Don't Be Cruel were released from MCA Records. Soon after there were talks about a tour for both acts, and MCA was left to choose which was the headliner. Being that New Edition's album debuted higher than Brown's and achieved Platinum album status before Brown's, New Edition was picked as the headliner and Brown was the opening act along with singer, Al B. Sure!.
The tour started on September 21, 1988 in Greenville, South Carolina and was planned to end sometime in March 1989. However, during 1988 with the release of the single, "My Prerogative", Brown's album started to get a major increase in sales and ended up topping the R&B Albums and later the Billboard 200 for 6 non-constitutive weeks in January-March 1989[5]. This resulted as a major change in the tour. In 1989, Brown became the headliner of the tour and it was renamed as the Don't Be Cruel Tour. The tour started January 18, 1989 in Miami and lasted until June 30, 1990, in Sydney. In April 1989, New Edition hopped off the tour after the North American Leg while Brown traveled overseas and finished the tour.
Shortly after the tour, New Edition split up to pursue their solo careers.
