NAKIVO is a privately held information technology company headquartered in Sparks, Nevada, USA.[1] It develops backup and disaster recovery software. The company has a global presence in over 170 countries with 7,000 channel partners.[2][3]

History[edit]

NAKIVO was co-founded in 2012 by Bruce Talley, formerly CEO of VirtualFabrix and CoroSoft, Sergei Serdyuk, Veniamin Simonov, Nail Abdallah, Margarita Matsko, Oleksii Osypov, and Sergey Yazvinskiy.

The first version of NAKIVO’s data protection software solution, NAKIVO Backup & Replication, was released later in 2012 for VMware vSphere virtual machines.[4] The software also received the VMware Ready status that same year, and the company became an Elite VMware Technology partner.[5][6]

NAKIVO quickly gained recognition, becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing software companies with over 800% revenue growth during the first year.[7]

By the end of 2013, the company introduced the Services Provider Program and expanded its Partner Program to include 450 channel partners.[8] It also added support for Linux systems, AWS integration, and instant file recovery to NAKIVO Backup & Replication.[9]

In 2014, the multi-tenancy functionality was added to the software solution to allow MSPs to offer BaaS, DRaaS, and RaaS services.[10]That same year, the number of resellers who joined the NAKIVO Partner Program reached 700 from 72 countries.[11] Subsequent 2014 releases added the Flash VM Boot feature for instant recovery of VMware vSphere VMs from backups, backup verification, and the GFS backup rotation scheme.[12]

In 2016, the product received an update that allowed it to back up, replicate, and recover Amazon EC2 instances.[13] The update also introduced instant object recovery for Microsoft Exchange.

In 2017, NAKIVO extended its reach by increasing the number of software solution resellers to over 1,700 across 115 countries in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.[14][15]

In 2018, the company entered the disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity market by introducing an integrated DR functionality with the Site Recovery feature.[16][17][18]

In 2019, NAKIVO launched the Managed Service Provider Program for MSPs that want to build BaaS, DRaaS and RaaS offerings based on the NAKIVO Backup & Replication platform.[19] By 2022, over 300 MSPs had joined the program.[20] In another 2019 release, the company added support for Nutanix AHV VM backup and physical Windows server backup.[21]

In 2020, the functionality of NAKIVO Backup & Replication was expanded with support for backup to tape, Oracle Database backup via RMAN, physical Linux server and workstation backup, physical machine recovery from backup to VMware VMs, backup to Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, and backup to Amazon S3.[22] The same year, NAKIVO entered the SaaS data backup market with backup for Microsoft 365.[23][24]

In 2021, NAKIVO introduced immutability support for different types of backup repositories and IT Monitoring for VMware vSphere environments.[25] The first update release of 2022 added unstructured data backup (CIFS/NFS network share data on NAS and Windows and Linux machines).[26]

Reception[edit]

In 2013, NAKIVO became the youngest company named “Emerging Vendor 2013” by The Channel Company (CRN).[27]

In 2014, CRN included NAKIVO on their list of 10 coolest storage startups. In 2015 and 2016, NAKIVO became one of the 20 coolest cloud storage vendors. In 2021 and 2022, CRN named NAKIVO one of the 20 coolest data protection companies.[28]

In 2018, NAKIVO received the “Best of VMworld 2018” Gold Award for Data Protection.[29] And in 2020, the company became the VMworld 2020 finalist in the Resilience & Recovery category.[30][31]
