Roman Albertovich Abalin (Russian: Роман Альбертович Абалин; born: January 24, 1998), or more commonly known as NFKRZ online, is a Russian Youtuber who makes content regarding Russian culture, politics and society to a mainly-English speaking audience.

Having uploaded his first video back in 2011, Roman has since grown the channel to 1.2 million subscribers as of 2023.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Roman grew up in the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia where he studied at Chelyabinsk State University, majoring in linguistics.

Roman has primarily Baltic ancestry (48%), but also has a sizeable East European ancestry (42%).

Roman started his channel at the age of 12 in 2010, yet did not upload any videos until 2011. Most of his earlier content is comprised of MLG videos, an aesthetic based around nostalgic and strange internet memes and gaming videos. After a few years of this sort of content, he slowly transitioned into Youtube commentaries and political discussions, the latter of which later becoming his main form of content, mainly around Russian politics and critiques of the Russian government.[2][3][4]

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Roman left the country for an indefinite period and is currently staying in Tbilisi, Georgia. Roman has been a vocal critic of the invasion, uploading videos that speak ill of the 2022 partial Russian mobilization[5], Russian censorship[6] and Russian propaganda[7] in schools, while also defending Ukraine.

Political views[edit]

Roman is a self-described social democrat, leaning to the left of the political spectrum economically. Socially, he also leans left, as he supports gay rights, abortion, less strict immigration, gender equality and racial equality.

Roman is an outspoken critic of the war in Ukraine and has critiqued Vladimir Putin several times.

Controversy[edit]

Following the invasion of Ukraine, Roman uploaded several videos talking about the ongoing situation, which included how everyday Russians were affected by sanctions, how Russia was banning social medias like Instagram and how he was experiencing hate due to being Russian.

This caused backlash from anti-war and pro-Ukraine viewers, who stated that he wasn't doing enough to help, to which he addressed in a video by stating that he was not a news outlet and that he feared potentially facing time in prison due to Russia's laws that prohibited discrediting and lying about the conflict.[8]
