Biography
Born in Thrissur district in Kerala, as the youngest son of Krishnankutty and Vilasini, Sajeev evinced a marked penchant towards art, music and theatre since a very early age. His passion for acting took a serious turn when he was at the age of 17, and he joined the ‘Campus Theatre’ at Nattika Sree Narayana College, Thrissur in 1989. It served as a platform to showcase his creativity and brilliance as an actor which also helped him gain the opportunity to be associated with Drama Enquiry and Learning Theatre (DELT) at Thrissur under directions and guidance of T.V. Balakrishnan. His ardent and unquenchable thirst for understanding the subtlest aspect of acting as an art, landed him at one of the most famous Theatre groups in Kerala, Ankanam in 1992.[3] Here, Sajeev was essentially trained as an Actor under the tutelage of dramatist K C Manavendranath. Eventually a three months intensive actors training class with Hartman deSouza[4] in 1993 changed his perceptions and notions regarding acting as a career. His belief and understanding that acting as a multifaceted form of art, inspired him to master Kalarippayattu, a unique martial art form of Kerala, from Vallabhatta Kalari Sangam, Chavakkad (1992–98) and Veda Kalari Sangam, Mullasseri, Thrissur (2005–09). He also received a basic training in traditional classical art forms like Kathakali and Koodiyattom, along with Hindustani, Carnatic music with passing years. This dedicated quest for excellence helped him in later years to devise his own creative and unusual methods of training aspiring actors in his Actors Training Program at ActLab. In 1996, Sajeev received a Talent Scholarship offered by Human Resource Department, Govt. Of India, to undergo an in-depth study in Movement and Voice skills required for Acting. Further from among the selected scholarship awardees, he was chosen to attend HRD’s one month intensive workshop for Acting in Allahabad and was given opportunity to perform the play "Virus" at Patna Gandhi Maidan, for delegates from across India. His being selected to be a part of Ford Foundation Project through Ankanam Theatre which opened up a sea of learning opportunities for him. During the course of the program he received hands-on training from the Masters of Indian Renaissance Theatre like Bensy Kaul, Rudhra Prasad Sen Gupta, Probeer Guha, Lokendra Aambam, MuthuSwamy Anmol Vellani, Neelam Mansingh Chowdary, K. Paintal, Veena Pani Chawla and others from the world of art, movies and theatre.
As an actor
Sajeev played the lead role in the play "A Thousand Rivers" directed by Hartman de Souza in association with Khel Goa Theatre (1993) which won him wide acclaim and accolades in the world of Indian theatre. The play was presented in different stages across the country, which in fact marked the beginning of his career as a Theatre actor in India. His lead role in "Padavukal – The Steps", based on Sophocles Oedipus, directed by Priya Nandanan, and his mesmerizing performance of G Shankarapillai’s Bharathavakyam had created ripples across the theatre world in Kerala during 1996-97.
