Nadeem Islam

Nadeem Islam is a British actor, TV presenter and performer. He is Deaf and a British Sign Language user.

Activity[edit]

Nadeem Islam started acting in primary school, before training in Community Art Practice at BRIT School and graduating in 2015.[1]

His first professional role was in the BSL deaf sitcom Small World, created by Brian Duffy and Ace Mahbaz, in the role of Omar, the owner of a kebab shop.[2] He was then approached for his first experience in television as a presenter of a documentary called Lost Space on the closure of a Bristol deaf club and its impact on the local Deaf community, and then a children’s TV show called Up For It?.[3] He has appeared as a presenter of BBC's magazine in BSL, See Hear on Tour (directed by Sebastian Cunliffe), for which he was nominated by RTS Awards for On Screen Talent, and on other TV shows such as the comedy series Deaf funny.[4][5]

Following this experience in television, he was cast in the play "Something Else" (2017, produced by Deafinitely Theatre). His work on stage include "Beyond the Canon" (with the National Theatre), "Horrible Histories: Dreadful Deaf", produced by Deafinitely Theatre and the team behind Horrible Histories, Blasted with Graeae/RADA and "Oliver Twist" (2020).[6][7][8]

He was cast in the hip hop drama Here/Not Here (2020), directed by Bim Ajadi,[9] and in the short movie Where I belong (2017), a performance that gained him a nomination for Best Actor by Deaffest UK Deaf Film/TV award.[10]

In 2021 he was awarded a bursary from Deafinitely Theatre.[11]
