Nancy Ruth (born January 3 1966) is a Canadian singer and songwriter, dedicated to jazz, Latin and world music. She plays the piano and Spanish guitar. She has been based in Málaga, Spain, since 2001[1].[2]

Early life[edit]

Ruth grew up in British Columbia, where an early interest of music led her to study singing and piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She also studied theatre at Studio 58 at Langara College in Vancouver, and continued her musical studies at Douglas College, New Westminster.

Career[edit]

Her first professional performances were as vocalist of rock bands; between 1986 and 1991 she toured with the bands Axess, Aces High, and Renaissance.

In 1992, she was the guest vocalist of the band The Lovehunters in Singapore, and during the same year, she performed for the Sultan of Brunei at the Royal Palace.

Between 1993 and 1997, she starred in the Beaver Creek Rendezvous show, a Klondike musical theater show in the Yukon Territory in Northern Canada. Her first album of her original songs, "Nancy Ruth" was released in 1998. [3]

In the following years, she focused her career on jazz, playing in clubs and events throughout Canada. Her Spanish roots led her to visit and live in Spain, incorporating Spanish guitar and flamenco into her repertoire, merging them with jazz in her compositions. She decided to move to Malaga, where she has been based since 2001.[4][5][6][7]

Her second album, "It's Got To Be Love", was released in 2004[8].

Nancy Ruth traveled around the world collaborating with artists from different musical genres, incorporating boleros and Latin American ballads into her repertoire[9]. Thus is born her third album, "Me Quedo", in 2008, which includes several songs in Spanish, which she co-wrote.[10].

In the following years, she continued with tours and performances, among them, in the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival, in 2010[11].

In 2011 she released her fourth album, "Para Tí", in Spain, recorded in both English and Spanish[12][13]; Nancy also wrote and starred in a tribute show to Latin American and spanish music, called "Trío Pasión"[14], with which she toured several countries between 2011 and 2014. Meanwhile, in 2012, she signed a licensing and distribution contract with Spectra Jazz label (USA).[15]

In 2016 she released a new album, "Sangria Jam", the fruit of the Spanish influence, combining flamenco, jazz and Latin rhythms[16][17][18].
