Natalia Ihorivna Blok (Ukrainian: Наталія Ігорівна Блок) (born July 18, 1980, in Kherson, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian playwright, screenwriter, and theater director. Her works have been staged at state and independent theaters in Ukraine and internationally. She has been recognized with multiple awards for her writing and is a founding member of the Theater of Playwrights in Kyiv.[1]

Early Life and Education

Blok was born in Kherson, Ukraine, and studied theater directing at the Kherson School of Culture. Graduated from the Kherson School of Culture with a degree in "Theater group management" specialization in 2000. Her education provided the foundation for her later work as a playwright, director, and screenwriter.[2]

Professional Career

Blok's plays have appeared at municipal theaters and in independent scenes both in Ukraine and abroad.[3] Her highlighted performances and premieres include:

  • "Das Leben ist unaufhaltsam" (Life is Unstoppable), Theater Basel, 2023/24 season.[1]
  • "Choose the best version" (Paris Globe, Norway, Estonia, 2024).[1]
  • "Ukrainian New Drama after the Euromaiden Revolution" (London, 2023).[2]
  • "Not All Dictators" (Melbourne, Australia, 2023).[2]
  • "WeltBühne" (Residenz Theater Munich, 2022).[2]
  • "Mom Sick" (Portugal, 2022).[2]

Her works have been translated into multiple languages including Polish, Georgian, German, Russian, French, English, and Romanian. Blok has curated the "Tizhden Drib" short list for the Tizhden Actual Play competition since 2019.[4]

She co-founded in 2020 the Theater of Playwrights in Kyiv, supporting the growth of contemporary drama in Ukraine and abroad.[5]

Blok has also written and directed for film and television, with credits including documentaries and feature films shown at international festivals.[2]
