The National Association of College & University Entrepreneurs (NACUE) is a charitable organisation that seeks to stimulate and nurture student enterprise in the UK by supporting, connecting and representing student-led enterprise initiatives and societies.
NACUE was founded in 2008 by then, Oxford Entrepreneurs President, Victoria Lennox, who, together with 12 leaders of enterprise societies across the UK, saw a need to drive forward a grassroots youth entrepreneurship movement with students acting as catalysts of entrepreneurship in their institutions and communities.
Today, NACUE supports more than 80 student enterprise clubs, 45,000 enterprising students and 100 academic institutions across the UK; is recognized as a global best practice in entrepreneurship promotion by UNCTAD and the World Economic Forum; and, has the support of leaders of entrepreneurship, industry, academia and government across the UK. Its core activities include mentoring, training and sharing best practice for student-led enterprise activity.
Since its launch, the charity has contributed to the growth of enterprise societies from 35 to 80 across the UK, and looks to represent the voice of student entrepreneurs to government by leading in the development of Enterprise Alliance UK.
Mission[edit]
NACUE aims to ensure that every student in the UK is exposed to enterprise and able to realise entrepreneurship as an achievable and desirable career option. The organisation is working to significantly increase the number of student and graduate ventures, building enterprise skills and contributing to the next generation of entrepreneurs.
The charity seeks to achieve its goals first and foremost through the student community. NACUE's CEO, Hushpreet Dhaliwal, said, "Peer-led societies today are enablers, increasing the knowledge, skills and networks of students and graduates. They will drive global business success by building more entrepreneurial environments and a culture that enables fellow young entrepreneurs to thrive."
Enterprise Societies[edit]
NACUE is a student-led movement that supports the sustainable development of enterprise societies, with the aim of creating a network of student-led groups on campuses in the UK. In theory, these societies in turn provide peer-to-peer support and inspiration for young entrepreneurs. The organisation also offers training to existing societies, staff and students, to nurture society growth and development.
NACUE aims to achieve this end by delivering mentoring, online tools and resources, and the NACUE Leaders Training Conference, designed to train incoming and outgoing president of each society.
National Events[edit]
NACUE runs an annual cycle of events that champion student and graduate enterprise and entrepreneurship. Events include the Student Enterprise Conference, the Varsity Pitch Competition, the Social Enterprise Conference, the Startup Career Launchpad on 18 & 19 April 2013 in London, and various Regional Events.
The charity has also developed support programmes for student and graduate entrepreneurs through Enterprise Bootcamps and Venture Academies, which aim to provide young entrepreneurs with an understanding of critical startup components, including understanding business finance and how to attract it.
Advocacy & Policy[edit]
NACUE has become increasingly recognised in the UK policy sphere, and is instrumental in representing the needs of enterprising students and societies to the UK government and national institutions. Its advocacy campaigns and projects currently focus around the recognition, support and empowerment of enterprise societies and enterprising students.
In January 2010 NACUE launched the Enterprise Alliance UK with Enterprise Educators UK and the Institute for Small Business & Entrepreneurship – leading membership-based organisations for enterprise educators, academics and researchers respectively. The Alliance allows the three organisations to put forward an independent voice on enterprise education to Ministers, Shadow Ministers and other government stakeholders.
In November 2011, the UK Government showed its support for NACUE in the form of a public announcement by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, in which the Government committed financial support for the growth of the enterprise society model into the majority of FE colleges and all universities by 2015. To date the government has committed £1.8 million to NACUE.
