The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to representing the interests of Latino health professionals across the United States.[1] The NHMA was established in 1994 after a group of Latino physicians, part of the White House National Health Care Reform Task Force[2], envisioned a nationwide organization to fill a void in Hispanic/Latino leadership who would better advocate for their communities at the federal level in the legislative and executive branches.[3]

History[edit]

Early years[edit]

In 1993, a group of Hispanic physicians participated in the White House National Health Care Reform Task Force meetings and decided to establish a professional association called the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). The goal was to address the lack of leadership for Hispanic/Latino physicians and advocate for Hispanic health with the federal government.[4] The announcement of their plan took place at a White House press conference in December 1993, attended by President Bill Clinton, First Lady Hillary Clinton, and 10 medical association leaders. The founders of NHMA were young physicians who had attended the White House Health Care Reform Task Force meetings from 1993 to 1994 and advocated for Hispanic health issues.[5]

NHMA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership association representing the interests of over 50,000 licensed Hispanic physicians in the U.S. The mission of NHMA is to empower Hispanic physicians and other healthcare professionals to improve the health of Hispanic populations through collaborations with Hispanic medical societies, resident and medical student organizations, and public and private sector partners[6]. The establishment of NHMA resulted from a meeting of the presidents of several Hispanic medical societies who recognized the need for an advocate for Hispanic/Latino physicians in the federal government.[7] This decision was based on a history of organizing efforts dating back to the 1960s when Hispanic medical students formed regional associations and local societies focused on social and charitable activities.
