The National Institute for Digital Security is a German not-for-profit organization established to support victims of Cybercrime and reshape the future through digital security. The foundation is working toward a secure digital society by providing shelter, stipends and security.[1]

History[edit]

The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a surge in online distribution of child sexual abuse material, which was already at high levels prior to the pandemic. The harm resulting from being a victim of this crime is severe, and every time a picture or video is shared, this results in repeat victimisation. The impact of this crime area can hardly be overstated and an effective response is of utmost importance. To prevent this Europol and others work with partners like the NIDS to organise prevention and awareness raising campaigns and will contribute its expertise to the discussions around the upcoming EU Strategy for a more effective fight against child sexual abuse.[2]

Several darknet marketplacces where unveiled and the operators prosecuted, like the famous CyberBunker.[3] While offenders[4] got arrested the victims need help.[5][6][7] Peter Wilfahrt founded the National Institute for Digital Security in 2021.
