Navdeep Singh Virk is the Commissioner of Police in Gurgaon. He joined the Indian Police Service in the Haryana Police in 1994, and has worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi from 2001 to 2005. Before becoming the Commissioner of Police in Gurgaon, he has also served as Haryana's Inspector General of Police (IGP), Law & Order. Virk studied criminology in the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, UK in 2010-11.[1]
Community Policing 2.0 Initiative[edit]
Navdeep Singh Virk has launched Gurgaon Police's community policing program called 'Community Policing 2.0 'which aims at involving participation of residents and corporate houses in non core police activities such as traffic management and neighbourhood watch schemes. Virk's idea of community policing 2.0 also asks for contribution of resources.[2] In an interview to Times of India, Virk has been quoted saying, "We will set up a Gurgaon police community fund where corporates can donate money, which could then be used to increase police infrastructure like PCR vans, barricades etc. The funds will be allocated in consultation with the public so they are aware and can contribute to decision-making on their city's needs.[3]"
According to media reports, 100 companies including Accenture, Samsung, DLF, Maruti, Nasscom, Omaxe, Fortis, Ericsson and Medanta have agreed to join Virk's community policing 2.0 initiative which was showcased before the 100 top corporate leaders of Gurgaon at a special event on 22 April 2015.[4]
Investigations[edit]
In 1996 when Navdeep was Assistant Superintendent of Police, he exposed a statewide issue in Food Corporation of India involving diversion of 55000 Metric Tonnes of wheat to the black market.[5]
In 2006, he unearthed a racket in Haryana where 2 lakh mobile connections have been handed out on forged identity documents. This led to review and change of subscriber verification policy by the Telecom department.[6][7]
In 2008, while serving as SSP of Sonepat, he achieved success in extraditing 3 Haryana gangsters in South Africa to India. Three criminals belonged to Surender Geong gang which was involved in the murder of a Kaithal plywood dealer, Narinder Arora, in March 2006.They had been declared proclaimed offenders by the court.[8]
During his role as Deputy Inspector General of Police in the State Crime Branch at Gurgaon, Haryana, Virk was the officer in charge of the team that conducted investigation into the Rupees 400 Crores Citibank fraud in 2011.[9]
Campaign for Road Safety in Gurgaon[edit]
Millennium City Expressways Private Limited (MCEPL) has followed Virk's recommendation to put in a lane system on the Gurgaon expressway to discipline the traffic after the removal process of Sirhaul toll plaza in Gurgaon.[10][11]
Navdeep Singh Virk has asked Municipal Corporation of Guragon to install a total of 367 CCTV cameras across 109 locations in city limits which will help manage traffic and keep a check on safety of women.[12]
Role in Cyber Crime Cases and Use of Technology[edit]
Virk is known for his interest in using technology to help police investigation. Virk has represented India in cyber security forum in Washington DC (2004), Moscow (2002) and San Diego (2003).A software created by Virk is used by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to detect cybercrime.[13]
He has also been in news for promoting the use of using instant messaging service whatsapp for all police officers in Gurgaon to help share important information quickly and to keep a digital record of suspects.[14]

He has also been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day (2011) by the Government of India.[15]
