He was one of the six finalists at the Comedy Central’s first edition of ‘Indian Comedy Festival’, a stand-up comedy contest in 2012.[2] He is the founder, actor, and writer of the critically acclaimed mockumentary web series, “Better Life Foundation”, which is the creation of Them Boxer Shorts, an acclaimed sketch comedy group.[3][4][5] He also co-wrote and acted in an absurd sci-fi themed web series, Star Boyz (2016) which has gone internationally with Kenny Sebastian, a fellow comedian of Kochi roots.[6] He also did a one-hour special solo stand up show, ‘Don’t Make That Face’.[7][8] He was one of the judges among the seven of India’s best comedians[9] in the Amazon Prime Video Original’s, Comicstaan (2018) and won the best mentor award.[10][11][12]
Personal Life
Born in Kochi, Richard grew up in Coimbatore and at a young age moved to Bangalore where he discovered his love for comedy.[13][14] Ever since he was a kid he had a knack for making jokes and funny faces and enjoyed entertaining people and fooling around the house.[15] He was the class clown who was constantly being compared to Mr. Bean, Jim Carrey and eventually Steve Carell.[16] During his 11th standard, the whole crowd was amused during his play on Teachers day which was a great success that he and his classmates performed in different schools as well.[17]
Career
While studying Bachelor of law in Christ University,[18] Richard did theater arts as a pastime, later through which he went to stand-up comedy.[19] He toured all across the country as a core artist with Evam Entertainment Company where they performed the popular play adaptation ‘Five Point Someone’ of Chetan Bhagat which is when he started to perform for a large audience.[20][21] Naveen’s scripts are mostly caricatures of himself and people around him. His famous characters like Uncle Francis and the Malayali landlady are an amalgamation of fact and fiction.[22] He played the role of ‘Pankaj’, an angry children’s librarian in Pushpavalli[23]which he co-wrote along with Sumukhi Suresh. [24] They also collaborated on another web series, 'Go Straight Take Left' which has dominated the space in Indian web series.[25] He played the lead in his debut film, Simple Superstar[26] (2013), Wilbur Sargunaraj’s biopic, the performing artiste widely known as India’s first YouTube sensation which has already won accolades world over. He was one of the comedians in Comedy Central’s original, ‘The Living Room’ which is claimed to be India's first English improv sketch comedy show.[27][28]
