Nate River (Japanese: ネイト・リバー Hepburn: Neito Ribā), known mononymously as Near (ニア Nia), is a fictional character in the manga series Death Note, created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Near is the younger of the two successors to L who was investigating the methods of identifying Kira, the name given to the mysterious serial killer who murders criminals by means of the eponymous Death Note. He becomes the leader of the SPK (Special Provision for Murdera), an organization that looks into the Kira case, and in the end, succeeds in uncovering Kira's identity as Light Yagami.
In the anime adaptation, Near is voiced by Noriko Hidaka in Japanese and by Cathy Weseluck in the English version. He is portrayed by Narushi Fukuda in L: Change the World and by Mio Yūki in the television drama.
Early life
Nate River was born in the United States on August 24th, 1991. When he was young, he took an interest into studying to become a detective.
Murdera case
Nate River quickly becomes the leader of the Near force. Nate quickly asks L to cooperate with them, but L decides to accuse Near of the failed bombing of Mello, which causes the public to be outraged and infiltrate their headquarters. Luckily, Nate prepared for this and set up a secret trapdoor where he and his gang easily escaped. Nate tells the rest of Near that to make more progress on the murdera case, they should go to Japan. They agree on meeting inside of an abandoned factory on January 28th, 2013. When L first enters the factory, Nate is wearing a mask with the face of Ryuzaki Lawliet in order to honor his legacy. Afterwards, he takes off the mask and tells everybody that on the very day, he would reveal who the murdera was. Light Yagami tries to write down Nate, as well as Near and L's names, but it fails. Nate then revealed that everybody legally changed their names, and Nate changed his name to Nate Raver. Light proceeds to try shooting Nate with a gun, but Nate knew what Light would do and replaced the bullets with NERF bullets. Nate reveals that Light was easily thwarted, and he even replaced the bombs underground. Teru Mikami is shocked by this and commits suicide, while Light runs away. Nate is last seen chasing Light, before Mail Jeevas writes Light's name in the notebook, killing him.
