Early Life

Light Yagami was born on February 28, 1986 inside of Kyoto, Japan. When he was a young boy in Elementary School, he took it upon himself to protect victims of bullying. Light had decided to divide every single person into two categories, good and evil. When he was in high school, he found that it was harder to reform the bullies, and classified them as useless to the world, and therefore the only way to take care of them was to delete them. However, Light's mother Sachiko Yagami scolded him, telling him not to waste his own time to stand up to the power of evil. This made Light believe that she was evil because she refused to stand up to evil. Not long afterward, the students who bullied Light and others were killed in a car wreck due to their recklessness. One pedestrian was also killed as a result—Light's mother. Light was at first terrified, but looking around, he found the class was a better place without the bullies, which shaped his ideals and beliefs.

Light and the Murdera Case

We were first introduced to a 17-year-old Light on episode 1, Rebirth. when he was his teacher Warui Gakkou’s favorite student. Light Yagami leaves his school on Febuary 29th of 2008 and discovers a notebook on the ground, the notebook has the words Death Note on it, and Light is concerned it will actually kill people whose names are written down in it, so he decides to try it out, Light turned on the television at his home and heard about Sunato Banda, an inmate on death row for murdering 3 men, he writes his name down and almost instantly, Banda dies of a sudden stroke. The very next day Light Yagami decides to write down 24 more names, one each hour. The names weren’t fully specified, but some of the names shown on screen were Oki Yaba, Taro Matsui, and David Ernesto. Inside of the second episode, Confrontation, Light is referred to as murdera by everybody else. When Light sees Lind Tailor on the tv, Light is overjoyed, as he knows that L won’t catch him, and that Lind was wasting his time. However, Lind calls murdera ‘evil’, which enrages Light as Light believes that he is doing a service to the world. However, when Lind dies, L reveals that the news was only being broadcasted to their own families as a test to see if the television would actually work for the plan that they were planning on doing. However, they then knew that it was a member of their own families. Light is enraged at this. Inside of the third episode, Dealings, When Light is heading home the next day, he notices that somebody is following him. He decides that this person was probably following him because he was being accused of being murdera. Light decides to taunt L by making fake notes, then proceeding to stay awake for 24 hours, writing down a name each hour. During the fourth episode, Pursuit, Light decides to set up a trap for the follower and uses the notebook to give 20 of his friends strokes. Light acts depressed and goes to a bridge to try jumping off. The person who is following Light acts instantly and tells Light to stop jumping off, but Light acts enraged and starts yelling at the person about how he was stalking Light, and how Light was believing that the person was a stalker. The person shows Light his FBI ID and Light sees that the person’s name is Raye Penber. Inside of the fifth episode, Tactics, Light then points a gun at Raye and holds Raye at gunpoint, threatening him to write down the names of every single other FBI agent. After Raye writes down the name of all of the other FBI agents, Light shoots Raye, and pushes Raye off a cliff. Light realizes that Raye misspelled all of the other names, except for Mark Dwellton, which at least makes another person suspicious. During the next episode, Unraveling, Light is told to bring McDonalds to his father. On his way, Light sees a girl and realizes that the girl must know the identity of murdera and is trying to contact L, so Light hides behind L headquarters to attack her. Light acts as a hitchhiker, and causes this girl, named Naomi Misora, to help him hitchhike. Light then asks for her name, which she claims is Shoko Maki. Light writes it down, and tells Shoko that he is murdera. However, as revealed inside of the next episode, Overcast, the death does not work, and Shoko reveals that it was a fake name, and now she has proof that Light is murdera, and she would drive him to police headquarters right away. Light is searching through her bag when he finally finds her ID. Light decides that writing her name would be too suspicious. Light then uses a piece of string to strangle her and hangs her body in an alleyway to make it appear that she committed suicide. During episode 8, Glare, When Light returns home, he notices something is off, as the bookmark inside of his book is off by one page. He believes that L likely set up security cameras to try to catch him in the act of killing, so Light has a plan. During dinner, Light takes up stairs a bag of potato fries. Light grabs the potato fries... and EATS IT. While making it appear like he’s just doing his homework, he is secretly writing names using the grease of the potato fries. Light is forced to then throw away the bag of fries to seem innocent. During the next day when Light gets back home, he noticed that the cameras were gone. During the next episode, Encounter, on the next day, Light goes to the school's entrance exams. Light observes people around him, and deducts that student 167, who is writing incorrectly, is L. Light gets ready to write the person's name down, but the student, who is Ryuzaki Lawliet, walks up to Light and tells him that he is L. Inside the next episode, Doubt, ‘L’ challenges Light to a bowling competition. Light easily wins, and then they go to Yuki cafe, where Ryuzaki asks Light if he can uncover the bizarre clues, showing Light a picture of the monitor spelling out Murdera’s gods love apples, that is instantly what Light assumes, but Ryuzaki claims that there was more to the message and reveals another photo, making it seem as it says Murdera’s gods love to bleed apples to make red hands. However, right after, they both get a phone call telling them that Light’s father and a member of the L force, Soichiro Yagami, had a stroke. When they visit him, Soichiro tells Light that Ryuzaki is L. While leaving, Ryuzaki tells Light that he seems innocent, but he cannot be too sure. On the next episode, Assault, during the night, Light sees a tv broadcast made by a fake person calling themselves murdera. Light forces himself into the L force, but with the belief that L isn’t the entire force, but just Ryuzaki. In the next episode, Love, Light records some tapes acting as the real murdera for the L force telling the fake murdera to stop, but the murdera tells Light that it is pointless getting him to stop, and then he sends the L force a list of times. Light notices that one of the times says to go somewhere to show off notes. Light goes to a cafe to decide on his options, and Light decides the best way to remove the second murdera is by going to meet with them. So, Light goes there with another member of the L force, Touta Matsuda. Inside of the next episode, Confessions, when Light arrives, he starts searching many places. Then, a girl takes Light away and asks him if he is the murdera, and tells Light that she is the second murdera. Light tells the girl, and the girl introduces herself as Misa Amane. Light starts telling Misa to keep herself more secretive, and Misa tells him that she has been. Misa tells Light that she does not care if he uses her. Misa convinces Light to use her for whatever reason, and Light tells himself that he can use Misa to kill L, and then he would kill her. In the next episode, Friend, Misa tells Light that he must see her once every week or she would kill him. Light is enraged at her demands. Light tells Misa to broadcast that she discovered that there were ten murderas in the world, but Ryuzaki finds out that this is false. Ryuzaki then calls Light his best friend, and tells him what a shame it would be if he was murdera. During the next episode, Wager, Light and Misa decide to meet in the park. When they meet, they discuss how to kill L, but then Ryuzaki approaches both of them and takes them in for questioning. Light knew that he would likely be tailed though, and he decided to bury it, leaving it there until a corrupt businessman would find the notebook. To ensure of this, he wrote down two fake rules, being that if you don't kill anyone for 66 days, you die, and the only person who could use this notebook was a corrupt businessman. During the next episode, Decision, Light's confinement starts. Light watches Misa die on day 39, and on day 61, Ryuzaki tells Light that since nobody has died yet, Light must be Murdera. During the next episode, Execution, on day 66, Light tells the L force that he needs to remove his pride. On the 67th day, the killings caused by a different person start. Light is told that he is being executed on day 96, but Light easily sees that these people are lying about his execution and that this is a test. So, Light acts scared. After it is revealed as a test, Light is invited to join the L force, and after a bit of research determines that the murdera must work for the Yotsuba plumbing group, as all of the non-criminal deaths were in Yotsuba’s favor. Light frowns and says that humans are quite disgusting creatures. The next day, inside of the episode Ally, Light follows the orders of Ryuzaki, and helps him read through the Yotsuba employee files. However, in the next episode, Matsuda, Light decides that somebody should go to Yotsuba Headquarters to investigate. Light sends Touta Matsuda. When Matsuda gets back from investigating, L deducts that murdera must be in the place that Matsuda investigated. During the next episode, Makeshift, Light decides to phone call every member telling them the name of a different member of the L force and telling them that the person works for L, and that they should kill them. The person who died was Steve Mason, who phone-called Kyosuke Higuchi. During the next episode, Performance, they decide to hire Light's girlfriend Kiyomi Takada to pretend to be another murdera, but when Higuchi starts shoving the ntoebook into Kiyomi's face, Light realizes that he cannot afford to show that the notebook was how he killed, so he killed Kiyomi using his own book. To the rest of the L force, this confirmed that Higuchi was murdera. Inside of the next episode, Guidance, Light tells a radio station to phone Higuchi, telling him that they know he is murdera and that they would make a report about him after the ad break. However, the radio station man whose name was never shown dies, which causes Ryuzaki to believe that Higuchi has the ability to kill people just based on their face. In the next episode, Frenzy, Light watches in a helicopter everything unfolding. He watches Higuchi get shot, and then he declares this battle over. In the next episode, Revival, Light and Ryuzaki approach Higuchi, who is bleeding. Light finds that this notebook is a different book. Higuchi whispers that he killed using the book right before he died, but it was only loud enough for Light and Ryuzaki to hear. The L force, other than Light and Ryuzaki, rush Higuchi to the hospital, telling them to search Higuchi’s bag. Light finds a gun and shoots Ryuzaki, killing him instantly. In the next episode, Silence, Light disposes of the body by throwing it off a bridge and claims that Ryuzaki had enough of this case and left to see his family in Dubai. Light is appointed as the new leader of the L force afterwards. In the next episode, Renewal, Light says that he would try discovering how Higuchi killed. As a bit of revenge for being criminals, Light writes down the name of Mary and Thierry, causing both to die of a stroke. However, Mary’s bike then crashed into the main office of Yotsuba, which destroys the building and kills many. Light spends around 5 years acting as a member of L while still playing the role of murdera. In the next episode, Abduction, the L group gets a phone call from a group of mafia members, known as the Mello. Mello tells L that they have kidnapped Kanichi Takimura, and they wanted a sacrifice to release him. In the next episode, Impatience, they send 20 FBI agents to raid Mello. Light is told to watch some security cameras to see what happens. In the next episode, Father, Light watches Soichiro sacrifice himself to destroy Mello. Light then gets a phone call from a group called Near asking if they would cooperate on this case. Light uses the book to kill a bunch of the members, but then the person tells him that he is figuring out more about murdera than L. In the next episode, Justice, Light tells the public that Near is responsible for the failure of the destruction of Mello. In the next episode, Transfer, Light notices that Near has hired some people to follow the members of L, so Light kills the person following him and writes the others in the book. In the next episode, Selection, it shows the flashback of Light's early life (inside of the early life section) and it ends with Light writing names as murdera. In the next episode, Scorn, Near contacts L, letting them know that they have retreated to Japan and they agree on meeting together during the next week. Light decides to set up a trap for Near and L inside of the factory where they are meeting up. However, while heading home, Light notices that a new Kingdom of Murdera has started, so Light pushes the man following him, Kiichiro Osoreda, into the train tracks, killing him. In the next episode, Vigilance, Light is surprised when he wakes up under the confinement of Near. The leader of Near introduces himself as Nate River, and asks what he thinks of Misa. To this, Light responds that he knew that Misa was the second Murdera, he just couldn’t prove it. Misa was never the one for him. Nate is unimpressed, and challenges Light. If during this time Light is being confined, a criminal dies, then Light is free to go. If not, Light is murdera and therefore will be punished. Light is forced to accept due to him seeing no other way out of this situation. However, a criminal actually dies, and Nate is forced to let Light go. Light decides that it would be too risky to kill Nate, so he waits. In the next episode, Malice, Light finds out that a member of the task force, Hideki Ide, was kidnapped by members of Mello and Matt. Light feels like this could be a risk to his plan, but is glad when Ide returns safe. In the next episode, 1.28, the time has come for L and Near to meet . They meet up together on the 28th of January, where Light goes face to face with the boss of Near. Nate says that the murdera will be busted, but Light knows that he likely will win. Previously, he had taped a piece of the death note on every inch of his body, and before entering, tested all of them. He wrote everyone else’s whole name minus the final letter, and in a swift move, writes all of their names down. Light is unable to hold his laughter in. However, in the next and final episode, New World, nobody dies of a stroke. Nate reveals that he already knew the plan, and he made everybody change their names. Light then pulls out a gun and shoots at Nate, but the only thing that comes out is NERF bullets. Nate reveals that he already knew about the gun, and replaced the bullets. Light had one more plan, which was loading the undergrounds with dynamite, but it doesn’t work either. Ide reveals that thanks to the final surviving member of Mello, Mihael Keehl, he managed to discover about the dynamite and removed it. Then, Light proceeds to pull out a knife, but is shot 7 times in his leg by Matsuda. Another member of the L force, Teru Mikami, is shocked and decides to commit suicide. While everybody is tending to Teru, Light runs away. While running up the stairs of a shopping mall, he collapses and dies of a stroke, which was revealed to have been caused by Mail Jeevas in prison.
