Neel Sarovar Bhavesh (Hindi: नील सरोवर भवेश) is an RNA biologist and a structural biologist.[1] He was born and brought up in Patna, Bihar, India. Presently, he is a Group Leader at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi. He is the recipient of the Young Scientist platinum jubilee award from National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) in the category of bio-medical sciences (2009) and a former Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
Education and Personal Life
Neel Sarovar Bhavesh was born in the East Indian state of Bihar on 24 May 1975. He is the eldest child of Prof. Ramesh Nandan Prasad Barial and Dr. Pusplata Lal. His father was an educationist and the Principal of Patna Training College at Patna University, and his mother was a lecturer of Psychology at Ranchi Women's College, Ranchi University, Ranchi. He completed his schooling at St. Xavier's High School, Patna and later graduated with Chemistry (Hons.), Physics, and Maths as optional subjects in 1996, securing 2nd rank from Patna University. He then earned his master's degree in Biotechnology (M.Sc.) from Goa university in 1998. Immediately after completing his M.Sc., he joined Prof. Ramakrishna V. Hosur for his Ph.D.[2] degree at the Department of Chemical Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. He completed his Ph.D. (Physical Chemistry) in 2003 and was awarded the Zita Lobo Memorial Award for the Best Ph.D. Thesis in Biological and Chemical Sciences.[3] He conducted postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich, where he worked in the group of Prof. Dr. Kurt Wüthrich, who won the Nobel Prize in 2002.
He is married to Hema Krishna, and the family resides in New Delhi.
Professional Life
Dr. Bhavesh joined the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi in 2008 as a staff research scientist and is currently a Group Leader at the Institute. Earlier, he worked at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics at ETH Zurich, Switzerland from 2004–2008. For more than a decade, he has extensively worked in the field of structural biology involving protein-RNA interaction, intrinsically disordered proteins.[4] and the development of new multi-dimensional NMR methodologies.[5] He reported a novel RNA binding property for a fungal cyclophilin that helps in salt stress tolerance in plants.[6] He has identified a unique protein-RNA interaction between RNA and TAF15 protein involved in amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS).[7][8][9] The US National Library of Medicine has listed 38 articles by Dr. Bhavesh in its online repository.[10] Dr. Bhavesh is a life member of the Indian Biophysical Society[11] and the National Magnetic Resonance Society.[12]
Awards and recognitions
Dr. Bhavesh has received several awards and fellowships in India and overseas. He is a recipient of the Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee award from National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) in the category of bio-medical sciences for 2009.[13] He was elected an Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences for 2009–2012.[14] He is also an Editorial Board member for the journal Nature Scientific Reports.[15]
Other notable achievements include:
- Prof. Uma Kant Sinha Memorial Award for 2011–12 by Indian Science Congress Association[16]
- Honorable Mention for the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Award for Young Chemist (2004)[17]
- Zita Lobo Memorial Award for the Best Ph.D. Thesis in Biological and Chemical Sciences (2004)[3]
