New Chapter
New Chapter is an organic vitamin and supplement manufacturer. It was sold to Procter & Gamble in 2012. It is based in Brattleboro, Vermont.[1][2][3][4][5] The company is a certified B Corporation.[6]
The company was founded in 1982. The founders started the business by making herbal extracts in their garage.[1] The company found early success after their Zyflamend product was mentioned by Andrew Weil on Larry King Live, it made $1 million in sales in one week.[7]
The company sources some ingredients from an organic estate in Costa Rica.[8]
The company saw strong sales during the 2008–2009 economic recession.[9]
At the time of the sale to P&G, the company sold over 80 different products.[7]
Through research at the firm, parent company Procter & Gamble was granted a patent for a food supplement that is reported to support health for hair, skin, and nails.[10]
In 2020, the company donated masks as part of a COVID-19 pandemic program.[11]
There has been criticism of the firm (and industry in general) because "Supplement promoters sell themselves as an alternative to big pharma, but giant pharmaceutical firms actually own the bulk of the industry."[12]
