New Europeans is a pro-European Union (EU) civil society organisation founded in June 2013 by Roger Casale, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Wimbledon.

The organisation is founded and based in the United Kingdom. It campaigns for the promotion of a European identity and the protection of the rights of EU citizens.

History[edit]

New Europeans was founded in June 2013 by the former Labour MP for Wimbledon, Roger Casale, as a response to growing euroscepticism in the United Kingdom and across Europe.[1] The organisation was officially launched at the House of Commons with cross-party parliamentary support on 18 June 2013.[2]

During the Brexit negotiations, New Europeans campaigned against using EU citizens living in the UK as "bargaining chips" and urged for them to be given greater security of their rights in the UK.[3][4] In 2017, the organisation won the Sheila McKechnie People's Choice Award for its campaign to guarantee the rights of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the EU. In the same year, Casale won the Financial Times' Future of Britain Award for an essay on the same issue.[5][6][7]

The organisation's founder, Roger Casale, was formerly the Labour MP for Wimbledon. In May 2017, Casale resigned from Labour in order to contest the Vauxhall constituency, held by Kate Hoey, a pro-Brexit Labour MP.[8][9] For this purpose, Casale announced the creation of Yes2Europe as a new political party.[10] Lambeth for Europe, the local pro-EU group, did not endorse Casale, instead opting for the Liberal Democrat candidate, George Turner.[11] In the end, Casale did not contest the constituency in the 2017 general election.[12]

Philosophy[edit]

New Europeans campaigns for the promotion a European identity. In its mission statement, New Europeans claims that it is committed to building a Europe of cooperation, integration, equality and diversity, without taking a position "about the form that this cooperation and integration should take".[13]

New Europeans "are working to change the narrative on migration, champion our rights to free movement and make the value and importance of European citizenship more widely felt in our everyday lives".[2]

Activities[edit]

New Europeans has collaborated with other European groups and institutions, such as European Citizens Abroad and Europeans Throughout the World, to promote European values and rights.[2] These collaborations have allowed for the establishment of various campaigns such as VoteAbroad, Changing the Narrative, VoteDenied, and Free Movement Rights, all of which are intended to support 'New Europeans' and encourage them to get actively involved with European politics, society, and culture.[14]

New Europeans has also been engaged in programmes such as Community Voices, the Talking Europe Project, and the Connecting Citizens Project. The aim of these projects is to guarantee the fundamental rights of EU citizens and understand how Europeans in Britain engage with the EU at a grassroots level.[2][14]

New Europeans is a member of the European Civic Forum and was nominated as NGO of the Year in the ECF's Democratic Citizenship Awards.[2]

New Europeans intends to establish business forums, develop an academic network on European identity and citizenship issues, and establish local and regional branches across Europe.[13] While it is based in the United Kingdom, the organisation has branches in Ireland and Brussels.[15]

To support its campaign for guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens, the organisation launched a petition for a "green card" to be issued to all EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the EU.[4] The organisation sponsored the People's March for Europe on 9 September 2017, a pro-EU rally in central London.[16] Representatives of New Europeans also spoke at the march.[17]

In spring 2017, New Europeans launched the London Project 2017-19, which aims to offer support and guidance to the million EU citizens living and working in London. The project is funded by Trust for London.[18]

The organisation has declared the equivalent of two full-time lobbyists in the EU.[19]
