Background and composition[edit]
"New Girl" was written and solely produced by Finneas.[1] It was released for digital download and streaming through his record label OYOY on August 12, 2016 and was later re-released on February 4, 2019.[2][3] In an interview with Atwood Magazine, Finneas explains that "New Girl", "I’m in Love Without" and "Break My Heart Again" were "all these songs that from the moment I started writing them to the time I recorded them it was a short period of time because I usually get obsessed with things like that and normally whatever else I had planned for that day goes out the window, if I feel like I have an idea I have to finish".[4] A piano-driven ballad, Its lyrics describe Finneas having a dangerously intense passion for a woman. In the chorus, Finneas sings: "I wanna scratch your surface/ I wanna feel your groove/ I wanna be your needle/ I wanna lick your wound/You wanna play with fire/Stick and poke tattoo/You wanna play, my new girl/I wanna play with you."[1] Alissa Arunarsirakul of Ones to Watch noted that "New Girl" is "intensely bluesy" in its instrumentation and the vocals are "seductive".[3]
Music video[edit]
An accompanying music video for "New Girl" was uploaded to Finneas' YouTube channel on February 4, 2019 and was directed by Emma Sydney Menzies.[3][1] The video shows Finneas pursuing an intimate relationship with a woman who is played by Yasmine Vega. In the opening scene, Finneas is seen sitting on a porch as a woman in a car pulls up next to him. With a surprised look on his face, he walks up to the car and enters it as she quickly drives off.[1] Throughout the visual, the two do many activities together such as sipping coffee during a breakfast date and dancing in an abandoned warehouse.[3] At the end of the video, the woman lures Finneas into the desert dressed in all black, red boots and red lipstick, as she hits him over the head with a shovel. She is revealed to be femme fatale. Finneas continues to sing as he lies on the concrete with a bloody nose.[3][1] Shelby Reitman of Billboard called the visual "dark" and "seductive".[1]
