News Bureau Nepal (Nepali: न्यूज ब्यूरो नेपाल; also known as E-News Bureau Nepal) is an online news portal based in Janakpur, Madhesh Province, Nepal.[1][2] It operates under Trinetra News Network Pvt. Ltd., registered with the Department of Information and Broadcasting of Nepal (registration no. 1216/075–76).[3]
History and operations
News Bureau Nepal was founded on 7 December 2017 in Janakpur.[3][4] It is registered with the Press Council of Nepal (Reg. No. 1004, dated 2074.9.30, location Dhanusa).[1] It began as a regional online outlet focused on community and provincial issues in the Madhesh region.[5] Over time, it expanded into broader national reporting, including political coverage, development features, and stories highlighting transparency and accountability in local governance.[5]
The outlet is affiliated with Radio Dhanushadham.[2] It publishes content primarily in Nepali and Maithili, with multimedia reporting, live coverage, and opinion features.[3]
Coverage and activities
News Bureau Nepal has covered multiple issues related to media freedom, social rights, and administrative accountability in Nepal.[5] In 2018, it reported on the case of Umesh Yadav, a Nepali migrant imprisoned in Saudi Arabia, which prompted diplomatic efforts for clemency.[4]
In 2020, it reported on incidents concerning restrictions on journalists in Dhanusha District, which were later discussed by other Nepali news platforms.[6] Its reports have also been cited in regional discussions on media transparency and provincial governance.[7]
Legal challenges
In 2024, the outlet faced defamation lawsuits from Dhanusha police over reports on border smuggling.[5] For instance, staff members faced multiple cases filed under the direction of SP Bhuvaneshwar Tiwari for publishing factual reports on police involvement in border smuggling.[5]
In April 2024, its executive editor Vinay Kumar Yadav died in a motorcycle accident in Dhanusha District.[2][8] Yadav, who also directed Radio Dhanushadham, had filed a police complaint two weeks earlier alleging death threats from a local individual amid a dispute.[8] The incident involved inconsistencies in witness statements and phone records, prompting calls for a thorough investigation from Yadav's family and the Nepal Press Union, Dhanusha chapter.[8] Dhanusha police detained a witness and stated investigations were ongoing.[2][9][10][11][12][13]
Recognition
During the 18th anniversary of Janakpur Today in 2017, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal recognized several regional journalists, including the editor of News Bureau Nepal, for contributions to provincial journalism.[14]
The editor contributed as the Maithili language translator for the Hamro Patro app in 2019.[15]
In February 2025, the editor's dowry-free marriage was reported as an example of social reform in Madhesh society.[7][16][17]
