Next X(G)eneration Referencing (stylized as nXr) is a reference management software for researchers to perform literature review[1], reference management and citation. It integrates three modules[2] nXr.iNote, nXr.iLibrary and nXr.iCite for collecting multi-type data (texts and images), searching notes and images in library, making citation directly based on notes and images besides article titles. It is developed by an Australia-based startup: NXR Systems[3]

    Features[edit]

With nXr.iNote Google Chrome browser extension[4], users can collect text and images not only from scholarly articles or books but also from any other related web articles. When users view a previously read article, nXr automatically shows the collected notes from the article and users can match the notes in the article with a click.

User collected article PDFs, notes and images are automatically stored in user library: nXr.iLibrary, a Web application[5]. In nXr.iLibrary, three different pages are available to view articles, notes and images separately. User can search articles as well as notes and images and sort them by applying multi-level filtering.

With nXr.iCite (a Microsoft Word add-ins)[6], users can cite based on not only article titles but also notes and images to directly validate writing in the manuscripts against the cited materials. nXr.iCite also allows access to the whole individual or group library so that users do not need to leave manuscript document to find references or notes.

Through nXr.iCite, users can share all the cited materials: article titles, notes and images to the reviewers. Instead of going through referenced articles, the reviewers’ can see manuscript and the cited materials side-by-side in nXr.iCite, which can reduce reviewers’ workload for checking accuracy of the cited material.

By adding research group members by emails in nXr, research group can automatically integrate members’ reviewed articles and annotations in one place. All the members then can anonymously view the group library and annotations besides their own library and annotations. They can also make citations by using their own annotations or group annotations.
