Niall Geany (born 9 January 2006) is a Scottish footballer and convicted criminal. He played as a right-back, most recently with The Spartans F.C.. In October 2025, he was convicted of rape and sentenced to 3 years and 9 months’ imprisonment at the High Court of Justiciary in Glasgow for an offence committed in Edinburgh in March 2024.
Early life
Geany is from Kirkliston, near Edinburgh. [1]
Club career
Geany is documented as a right-back in youth / lower-league football, most notably with The Spartans. [1][2]
Criminal conviction
On 3 March 2024, Geany and a woman shared a taxi after a night out in Edinburgh. When they arrived near the woman’s home, he claimed his phone was dead and asked to be allowed inside to charge it; she permitted him entry.[1][3]
Once inside, Geany attempted unwanted sexual contact, despite the victim repeatedly refusing consent. She told police and at trial she had repeatedly said “no” and tried to push him away.[1][3] He later admitted in police interview that she told him to “stop,” but he proceeded nonetheless.[2]
He was tried at the High Court in Glasgow and found guilty of rape. On 7 October 2025, he was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months’ imprisonment, placed on the sex offenders register, and issued a non-harassment order barring contact with the victim indefinitely.[1][3][2]
At sentencing, Judge Alistair Watson remarked on the breach of trust, the serious harm inflicted, and the aggravating circumstances (including that the offence took place in the victim’s bedroom). The judge also considered Geany’s youth, assessed risk of reoffending as low, and commented on his “high intelligence” in mitigation.[1] The judge said Geany should initially serve part of his sentence in a young offenders’ institution before transfer to adult prison.[1]
Aftermath and media reaction
The case drew attention in national and regional media, particularly because the victim had initially let Geany into her home as a gesture of assistance (to charge a phone). [2][1] Some commentators and news coverage questioned the relative length of the sentence given the seriousness of the crime. [2]
