Nicholas Robinson (civil servant)
Nicholas Robinson is the current Director-General of Civil Aviation at Transport Canada.[1]
Career[edit]
Prior to joining the role with Transport Canada, Robinson was the Director-General of Strategic Policy and Government Affairs at the RCMP and its Commissioner on horizontal and Government of Canada issue management, policy and priorities that impact Public Safety and Security.[2] Robinson was formerly attached to the Government of Canada’s Privy Council Office, where he advised on issues relating to Public Safety, Justice and Veterans Affairs.
Early years[edit]
Robinson has a Bachelor of Health Science and a Master of Arts from Dalhousie University.
Boeing controversy[edit]
In May 2019, Robinson stressed that his office would do its own "risk-based validation" of the FAA’s review of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft before it lifted the restriction that has grounded the jet in the wake of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash. Quoth he: "Transport Canada will be doing its own review of these design changes prior to accepting them on Canadian-registered aircraft by our own validation process... Our review of the Max design changes, the software upgrade is already underway... The validation will be completed once we are certain that the safety risks that were presented by these two incidents have been addressed." Robinson said that as of 23 May, his agency still had "full confidence" in the FAA as it certifies American products for the supranational web of Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreements.
