Nicholas Paul Astbury is a British career diplomat with over 30 years service at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) both overseas and in the UK.
Early life and education
Astbury was born to British parents in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He attended primary schools in Singapore, Malaysia, Panama and the UK. He completed secondary education at Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge, England. During his university education he studied at University College London, Sorbonne University in Paris and the Open University in Milton Keynes gaining three degrees: Bachelor of Arts in History, Master of Arts in Legal and Political Theory and Master of Business Administration.
Career
Astbury served as Her Majesty's Ambassador to Eritrea from 2006 to 2008. His previous overseas postings were to Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Subsequent to Eritrea, he was appointed Deputy Consul-General in New York and then Deputy High Commissioner to Jamaica and the Bahamas from November 2016 to August 2020.[1][2]
Astbury's assignments in the UK include Deputy Head of the FCDO Migration and Conflict Directorate, Head of the joint FCDO Sudan Unit, Deputy Head of the joint Home Office/FCDO UK Visas Department, Private Secretary to two FCDO Ministers, FCDO Press Officer and work on European Union issues.[citation needed]
Personal life
At University College London, Astbury captained the College for Rowing.[2]
