Manik Choksi (born April 14, 1981)[1], known as Nick Choksi is an American actor. He is best known for his role as Dolokhov in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.
Early Life and Education
Choksi was born to an Indian family on April 14th, 1981. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri.[2] As a child, he read the Indian epic Ramayana, a text he found especially meaningful.[3]
Choksi attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in 2003 as an English Literature major with a minor in acting.[3][4] He began to view acting more seriously as a career option after working at a touring children's theater group with the St. Louis Repertory Theater.[3] After being initially waitlisted, he attended the Juilliard School, joining Group 39 of the Drama Division (2006–2010).[5]
Career
Choksi began his career in St. Louis and Chicago, eventually moving to New York City for greater opportunity.[3] He starred in various Off-Broadway and Off Off-Broadway productions.[6] This included Twelfth Night at the Sonnet Repertory Theater in 2010[7], Invasion! at the Flea Theater in 2011[8], the Urban Dictionary Plays at Arts Nova in 2011[9], and Bunty Berman Presents with The New Group in 2013, for which he was nominated for the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical[10]. He starred in Indian Ink with the Roundabout Theater Company in 2014, Brooklynite at the Vineyard Theater in 2015[11], and Chubbed Thumb's Summerworks in 2015 and 2016[12][13].
In the summer of 2012, Choksi auditioned for Ars Nova's developmental reading/workshop of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, a sung-through musical written by Dave Malloy based on a seventy page segment of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. He auditioned for the roles of Andrei, Dolokhov, and Balaga, eventually being cast as Dolokhov[14]. Though he left the production during its run at Kazino in the Meatpacking District, he rejoined for its transfer to Times Square. In 2015, Choksi played Dolokhov during The Great Comet's run at the American Repertory Theatre. He made his Broadway debut[15] as Dolokhov at the Imperial Theater in 2016[16][17] and stayed with the production until it closed in 2017.[18][19]
In 2019, Choksi narrated the Audible play Evil Eye, for which he won an Audie Award.[20][21] Choksi starred as Ishmael in Malloy's musical adaptation of Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick in December, 2019 with the American Repertory Theatre.[22][23] His performance was praised by critics.[24][25][26]
Outside of his stage career, Choksi also regularly appears on television. He has appeared on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Showtime's Happyish, One Life to Live, Law & Order, HBO's Succession, New Amsterdam, and more.[1]
In addition to acting, Choksi is also a skilled illustrator[27] and animator.[3][12] He also plays the guitar.[3] He is currently working on writing a rock-opera based on the Indian epic the Ramayan.[3][28]
Personal Life
Choksi is married with one child.[29]
