Nicholas Don Wheeler (born March 20, 1982) is the lead guitarist, co-founder and backing vocalist for The All-American Rejects.

Biography[edit]

Nickolas Wheeler is a Nashville-based producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. As the co-founder, lead guitarist, and one of the primary songwriters of The All-American Rejects, he has sold over 5 million albums worldwide, with their single "Gives You Hell" hitting #1 on the Top 40 chart in 2009 and remaining on the charts for 36 weeks. Other hits include "Move Along," "Dirty Little Secret," and "It Ends Tonight," which all ranked in the top 10 on the Billboard Charts.

Based in Nashville since 2015, Nickolas is now building Wheelhouse Studio, a freestanding space in East Nashville. In setting up his own studio, he credits historic spots he's worked in – the Village in Santa Monica, Barefoot Studios in Hollywood – in learning how to maximize both workflow and comfortability for artists. Wheelhouse Studio will have isolation, separate control and tracking rooms, as well as a lounge, kitchen, and outdoor courtyard space.

Nickolas has been recording music since 1996 and making music professionally for almost 20 years. When artists come to record at Wheelhouse Studio, they can expect to feel taken care of by a producer who's ready to guide them to the next stage of their career and accomplish whatever they're wanting to create. The studio is a space for Wheeler to work with artists and writers "who are excited and passionate about what they're doing and open to collaboration in a vibey, comfortable, professional space."

After attending Oklahoma State University for music theory, Nickolas has since honed his skills through an Advanced Certificate in mixing, engineering, and orchestration at Berklee College of Music, as well as becoming an Avid Certified Pro Tools User. Nickolas is also endorsed by Warm Audio, an Austin-based company that makes "some great reproductions of classic gear". Wunder Audio (another Austin-based company) is also custom-building a console for the studio.

Though he's primarily someone who works best in the studio recording and producing music, Nickolas likes to develop a rapport with artists through writing with them. He's written with Welshly Arms, Never Loved, and Cassadee Pope, as well as several local independent artists in the rock, alternative, and pop music world in Nashville.

Nickolas is the recipient of several ASCAP Pop Awards, and in 2007, he was the recipient of the ASCAP Vanguard Award. He was also inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2008. More than two decades of experience have primed him with the knowledge, passion, and drive to launch his own freestanding studio..[1]

Early Life[edit]

Wheeler's musical career was first inspired through his sister' music collection such as Queen, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. He first started playing guitar when he was seven.

When he was a teenager, he was invited to play with his band at a party where Tyson Ritter was the bouncer. Ritter, seeing that Wheeler's band didn't have a bassist, joined them, starting a close friendship with Wheeler, although Ritter had never played a bass guitar in his life. The two traveled to New York City to record their first album. Later, they added Mike Kennerty and Chris Gaylor to their live show. Their first album, for which Nick played drums and guitar, relased many hits such as Swing Swing, Time Stands Still and The Last Song. After a year a half hiatus, they relased their second album called Move Along, this time with Interscope Records instead of Doghouse Records, which relased their first self-titled album. The CD sold much better than the first album, with Top 20 hit, Move Along and Top 10 hits It Ends Tonight and Dirty Little Secret.

He has many tattoos, including the Queen Crest on his upper left arm and a Muppets tattoo on his upper right arm. He also has the Def Leppard Hysteria album cover triangle on his right shoulder/back and a Bon Jovi tattoo on his left shoulder/back. He also has a Smashing Pumpkins tattoo on his inner left arm along with the Tournado logo near his triceps and a tattoo of the Gibson Firebird logo on his inner right forearm. He also has a tattoo of his dog Chiquita coming out of a banana with a sticker of Oklahoma which is were he was born on one of his lower legs. All four members of the AAR have the AAR logo on their upper right breast.

In 2006, Wheeler and his bandmates embarked on two tours: the Black Clouds and Underdog Tour with Fall Out Boy and their headlining tour, Tournado.

Though he did not appear in the video, he played guitar for the song Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) which featured frontman Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship), William Beckett (The Academy Is...), Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), and Maja Ivarsson (The Sounds).

In 2007, Wheeler and Ritter played an acoustic version of 'It's My Life alongside Bon Jovi on MTV Unplugged: Bon Jovi.

On April 5 2008, Wheeler and bandmates, along with Paramore, headlined Bamboozled Left in Irvine CA.

Equipment[edit]

He owns many guitars, both electric and acoustic. His main guitar is his Vintage Sunburst Gibson Firebird V. He is seen with a Firebird in all of The All-American Rejects' music videos except for "Gives You Hell", in which he uses a Transparent Green Gibson ES-335 and a Gibson ES-335 Transparent Blue in It Ends Tonight. Also in "The Last Song", he is seen with a Classic White Gibson Firebird. He also owns a cherry Gibson Firebird VII. Aside from using his Gibson models, earlier in his career during concerts Nick is also seen using a few Fender Telecasters.

Now for acoustic guitar he uses a Gibson SJ-150 EC Jumbo Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar. Earlier while touring for their self titled album and the beginning of the Move Along Tour he used a Black Guild Guitar Company Acoustic Guitar.

Nick's choice in amps nowadays is a Vox AC30 for his dirty sounds and for his clean tone, he usually uses uses a Roland JC-120[2], but sometimes a Fender Bassman as well.

He uses a Big Muff (New York Version) for his main distortion. On their Kyte Channel, it is seen that he has a Lovetone Big Cheese for the song Damn Girl on their third album When The World Comes Down.

For Touring he has a whole rack of effects and other stuff. He uses a Shure Wireless Guitar System. For guitar effects he uses a Line 6 Echo Pro, Mod Pro, and Filter Pro. He also has a Voodoo Lab Ground Control Pro to control all his Line 6 effects and his other guitar pedals. With that he has to own a Voodoo Lab GCX.
