Nikki Lamborn (born in Bristol, UK) is a singer-songwriter, vocal and performance coach, leader with Catherine Feeney of the English band Never The Bride, and actress.[1]

Career[edit]

Early career[edit]

In 1984, under the nickname "Nikki B", she began regularly appearing on the The Thekla, a boat used as a theatre, where she became a popular fixture, regularly packing out the ship. In September 1985 Nikki Lamborn was persuaded by Ki Longfellow-Stanshall and her husband Vivian Stanshall, the owners of The Thekla, to play the role of Persian Moll in their musical, Stinkfoot, a Comic Opera. The musical received rave reviews from the Bristol press as well as London’s The Times and The Guardian, giving a special praise to Nikki’s voice. She then performed on the ship with the accompaniment of Andy Sheppard, a jazz saxophonist, during the months of January and February of 1986. [David Rappaport]] was their compare. David, “Randall” from the film Time Bandits, was living aboard the ship at the time. Also in 1986, Nikki Lamborn managed to record some demos at Vivian's friend Steve Winwood’s Netherturkdonic Studio. Steve Winwood also appears on these demos, sent to various music companies.[2]

In 1989, Nikki Lamborn is lead vocalist in "Earth Moving (song)", a song from the 12th Mike Oldfield's album "Earth Moving", under the name Nikki 'B' Bentley.[3]

On February 1991, Mike Oldfield released the album "Heaven's Open", in which Nikki Lamborn appears as Nikki 'B' Bentley in the additional vocal harmonies.[4]

Never The Bride[edit]

In 1991, Nikki founded the band Never The Bride together with Catherine "Been" Feeney, shortly after meeting on stage in a London pub. Nikki Lamborn is the lead singer of the duo, while Catherine "Been" Feeney is the main composer, keyboard player, vocalist and occasional guitarist.[5]

Through the years, the band supported many musicians and bands: The Who, Robert Plant, ZZ Top, The Pretenders, Alice Cooper, Gary Brooker and Peter Frampton.[6]

In 1999, the producer David Fishoff organised the British Rock Symphony tour: great musicians interpreted some of the greatest British classic rock songs from the 60s and 70s. The songs were taken from the repertoire of bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who, accompanied by a symphonic orchestra, a choir and a rock band.[7] Never The Bride performed "Kashmir" and "Stairway to Heaven". Other vocalists included Roger Daltrey, Darlene Love, Alice Cooper, Paul Young, Simon Townshend and Gary Brooker. The British Rock Symphony tour launched at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK, on June 28, 1999. Besides the UK, they also toured Europe and the United States.[8]

In 2001, Catherine and Nikki decided to found their own record label, Lock Stock and Barrel Records, to be able to sells directly to their international fan base whilst retaining full artistic control. They self-released some successful albums, starting with a collection of demos entitled "While U Wait Vol. 1". Then followed "Surprise", "Licensed To Bitch" and "Vancouver 97".[9]

An highlight to Never The Bride's career is probably the production of the album Get the Party Started by Dame Shirley Bassey.[10] Featured in this album appears the song The Living Tree, which Nikki and Catherine state to have composed for Dame Shirley Bassey. The song was first performed by Shirley Bassey in front of the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance.[11]

Solo career[edit]

As a solo performer, Lamborn has duetted with Chaka Kahn, Brian Adams and Roger Daltrey, who said: "Nikki Lamborn has the best female rock voice since Janis Joplin and I know what I'm talking about, I knew Janis.".[12]

After being his student, in 2001, she began teaching the method of Glynne Jones (vocal coach of Annie Lennox, Elton John, Heather Smalls, Spice Girls, and many others). This method enables a singer to keep their own voice and personality whilst extending their range, perfecting their pitching, strengthening their voice and building their breathing capacity. Her technique also gives important advices on maintaining the singer’s voice, and building the performer's confidence. Nikki Lamborn coaches a wide variety of singers, including Beverley Knight, Gabriele Aplin, Hudson Taylor, Jocelyn Brown, Lana Del Rey, Mumford & Sons, Muse, Newton Faulkner and many others.[13]

In 2006, Lamborn appeared in a concert and auction held by The RD Crusaders, a supergroup band created by The Who's Roger Daltrey and newspaper publisher Richard Desmond in 2003, in Old Billingsgate Market which they raised funds for the Evelina Children's Hospital Appeal.[14]

On July 2010, Lamborn took part in a "Stinkfoot Showcase", a showcase of songs from Stinkfoot, a Comic Opera by Vivian Stanshall and Ki Longfellow-Stanshall), with a full band and selected cast members plus Tony Slattery as narrator and singer. It attracted the attention of major press (The Word magazine, Mojo magazine, BBC London and BBC Bristol), and theatres like the Bristol Old Vic.[15] [16]

Film and Television[edit]

Nikki Lamborn plays the role of Rhonna in the upcoming British-German science fiction mystery film directed by Duncan Jones, "Mute", which will air on Netflix on 23 February 2018.[17]

Lamborn will be one of ’The 100’ Music Industry Experts and Judges on a brand new Saturday night BBC One prime-time entertainment programme, “All Together Now”.[18]
