The Nintendo Switch – OLED Model[1] is the second Nintendo Switch revision to be released by Nintendo. The OLED Model adds many new features to the system, including an OLED screen and a new adjustable stand. It plays all of the same games as the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite. It released on October 8, 2021 alongside Metroid Dread[2] and was bundled with either white Joy-Cons and dock, or neon red and blue Joy-Cons and black dock.

Hardware[edit]

Just like the original Nintendo Switch, the OLED Model is a hybrid video game console. It still consists of the console unit, a dock, and two Joy-Con controllers. The only change related to the Joy-Con is that one of the Nintendo Switch OLED Model bundles features a new white-colored Joy-Con. The internals of the controllers are the same as every other Joy-Con, however.[3]

Console[edit]

The main body of the console has many of the new additions that the OLED Model introduces to the Nintendo Switch family of systems. The change that gave the OLED Model it's name, the new 7-inch OLED display is both bigger and brighter than the standard Nintendo Switch.[4] The screen is also now glass instead of plastic.[5] A fan-favorite addition is the new wide, adjustable stand, improving the Nintendo Switch's "Tabletop Mode."[6] The OLED Model also adds an extra 32 gigabytes of storage, bringing the total amount of internal storage to 64 GB. It still features a microSD card slot, still found behind the new adjustable stand.[7] The OLED Model also boasts what Nintendo is calling "Enhanced audio."

Enjoy enhanced audio from the system’s onboard speakers in Tabletop and Handheld modes.

Dock[edit]

The dock that comes with the Nintendo Switch OLED Model is slightly different than the dock that came with the original Nintendo Switch. The most significant change is the new built-in LAN port. This replaces the USB port found in the back of the dock. There are still two USB ports on the side of the dock.[8]

  1. While the Tegra X1 SoC features 4 Cortex-A57 plus 4 Cortex-A53 CPU cores, the Switch Lite only uses the former, of which 1 is reserved to the operating system.
  2. A temporary "boost mode" increases the CPU clock speed to 1.785 GHz. It is primarily used during loading screens.
