Nischal Vijai is an Indian filmmaker, writer, architect, and photographer.

Biography

Nischal Vijai is an Indian filmmaker, writer, and architect whose creative vision is rooted in the vibrant storytelling culture of South India. Predominantly working in the Malayalam film industry, he has carved a distinct space as a passionate visual craftsman. His notable works include serving as Assistant Director for the acclaimed films Janaki Jaane (2023)' and The Pet Detective (2025).

Born on 17 June 1996 in Kollam, Kerala, Nischal grew up with an eye for detail and a deep love for images, stories, and spaces. His early education at Sri Vidyadhiraja Model Memorial HSS, Kottarakkara laid the foundation for his creative pursuits, which later led him to study Architecture at Jagannath University, Jaipur—a discipline that sharpened his sense of structure, composition, and visual rhythm.

Nischal’s filmmaking journey began in 2017, when he directed his debut documentary on a historic heritage temple in Rajasthan. The film marked the arrival of a young storyteller with a voice rooted in culture, memory, and identity. His time in Jaipur was also shaped by active student leadership, being elected as a District Committee Member of SFI, Jaipur in 2018.

Parallel to his film aspirations, Nischal built a strong foundation in photography, working as a commercial photographer in Jaipur. His lens captured people, places, and emotions with an instinctive cinematic touch. In 2020, he became a member of the All Kerala Photographers Association (AKPA), deepening his engagement with the creative community.

His documentary on Kottathala Surendran, released in September 2020, showcased his ability to portray real lives with authenticity and emotional weight. This further opened doors into advertising, where he worked alongside noted filmmaker Aniesh Upaasna, assisting in his first major brand advertisement for a leading textile house in Kerala. The creative partnership continued in 2022 with the musical album “Kaathale,” reinforcing Nischal’s presence in the ad and music-video space.

Recognized for both his artistic and leadership qualities, he was elected as the Unit Treasurer of AKPA in April 2022.

Today, Nischal Vijai stands among the promising new voices in Malayalam cinema—a filmmaker who blends architectural precision, documentary truth, and cinematic poetry. With each project, he continues to build a body of work defined by visual depth, emotional storytelling, and a relentless passion for the craft.
