Noctivagus was a Portuguese Gothic rock , post punk band, formed in Setubal, Portugal in 1993.[1][2][3][4] The name of the band is a Latin word, meaning (Night Wanders, Night Walkers).[5][6] Certain lyrics and poems are characterized by the romantic idealization of death and the supernatural imagination. Fitting in themes such as paganism, vampirism and nihilism.[7][8][9][10]
History[edit]
The first studio room, was in an attic, in the Cultural Circle of Setúbal.[11] [12]
Noctivagus was founded by Andre Antunes, Lino Cunha ( Aka: Lino Átila), José Carlos (Aka: Soneca), Paulo Jorge Tavares and Vitor Valido.[13][14][15] With this formation they record the E.P " Almas Ocultas” (1995)[16] and the E.P " Imenso" ( 1998).[17][16][15]
In 1995, under the title "Almas Ocultas" E.P (by Entulho Informativo / Zenith Records), of which will be taken a promotional cassette-single that included the tracks "Cria Vampira" and "Castelo da Morte". This registration will lead the preferences of the top chart list of the Santos da casa program (by Nuno Ávila)[18] broadcast by Rádio Universitária de Coimbra.
After the gig with the Spanish group Gothic Sex in the end of 1998, with a new member on the bass guitar Paulo Dumonte. The band had stopped for two years.[19] [20] However, it is released in 1999 the cd Cruzes e Fivelas.[21][15]
In 2000, the band returned with a Portuguese tour and new songs and new formation. Alexandre Palminha, David Pereira, Tempestade, Lino Átila and Paulo Dumonte.[22] [23][15]
With this formation they will in 2003 recorded the debut CD album with the name After The Curse, edition of the label Floyd Records.[24] distribute by Division House [25] They also played at various festivals with bands like Sanguis et Cinis, London After Midnight (band), Nosferatu for example.[26][27]
In the same year (2003), the video clip "Bad Dreams" made by David Rebordão (director and producer)[28] arrived to the 1st place of the Top of Voting, during three consecutive weeks in the Curto Circuito program, of the Portuguese cable Tv Sic Radical ( in July).[29][30][31][15]
Conquest the same feat during a week, in October, of the same channel, in the "Top Max Music".[32]
In the years immediately following, they will continue to act with bands like The Crüxshadows, Pretentious, Moi?[33]. Internal problems, however, prevent the band from recording any new records during that turbulent period. Only a participation in a tribute compilation to the British band Joy Division with the single transmission in 2005 by the label Tomb Factory is known(Considerate by critics as a big romping Goth cover of ‘Transmission’ by Joy Division).[34][35]
In 2007, they also participated in the Lithuania Festival "When the spirits Awake" at the city of Vilnius.[36][37][27]
In 2008, one of the most important magazines in the goth subculture of Germany(the German, glossy paper printed underground goth Crawling Tunes Magazine)includes the song last night by the Band Noctivagus in the compilation "Crawling Tunes, Volume 2".[38]
In 2009, The band was also recognized for their work by Mick Mercer, who mentions them in their book Music To Die For.[39]
In 2010, The single Pilgrim Dimension with, Lino, Nuno, Fernando and Lady Miss Kill,[40] arrived to the top 20 Music World Radio.[41] [42]The two songs on this single were included also on the CD album Ecos da Noite in 2011. [43] The title of this single was also the name of the last known tour.[44] They also played in the hard club (Porto) and space out of hours (Seixal Electrofest III Young March).[45]
"After" the end of the band in 2011, in 2017 Lino Cunha recorded a new álbum with a new project called Vulto Violeta.[46] [47]
In 2019 the song bad dreams joins the top chart 20 (the best gothic videos) of the Portuguese radio program sinfonias de aço.[48]
2021, Nuno D'Ávila, guitarist of the portuguese gothic rock band Noctivagus, died. The causes of death, confirmed on August 8 by former bandmate Lino Cunha on the band's Facebook page, were not disclosed ( "I am speechless to write about my friend, brother and comrade on the road", writes the musician, "rest in peace brother!") .[49]
