North Macedonia–Peru relations refers to the bilateral relations between North Macedonia and Peru. Both countries are members of the United Nations.

Before the country's independence, Peru maintained warm relations with its predecessor state, Yugoslavia.

History[edit]

Peru and North Macedonia established diplomatic relations on June 29, 2005, with Peru recognising the Balkan country under the name of Republic of Macedonia instead of the widely used Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In turn, Northern Macedonia supported Peru's candidadcy to the UN Security Council on the same year and abolished the need for travel visas between both countries in 2006.[1]

In 2010, both countries opened honorary consulates in each other's capital cities. The following year, foreign minister Antonio Milošoski visited Lima on February 21st.[2][3] The meeting was held to discuss trade, as well as mutual support for each countries' candidacies to international organisations. Thus, Peru's candidacies to the International Maritime Organization and the International Law Commission in 2016 were supported by North Macedonia.[2]

Trade[edit]

Despite both countries' positive diplomatic relations, North Macedonia is a non-EU state with which Peru has traded the least, as Peruvian exports to the state have been nonexistent in the years 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2016. 2010 was an exceptional year, as Peruvian exports were valued at US$ 170,000 on that year.[4] Similarly, North Macedonia has little commercial connections with South America.[5]

Peruvian imports include precious metals (85% of total exports), men's shirts (7.6%) and car seats (2.7%).[6] In contrast, exports included seeds (84%), and other food products (5.8%).[7]
