NostalgIA is a song by Chilean producer MauryCEO under his project FlowGPT.[1] The song was released on October 4, 2023, via digital download and streaming platforms. It features AI-generated voices of Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber. Its viral success on social media, especially TikTok, sparked global discussion around artificial intelligence and copyright in the music industry.[2][3]
Viral success and controversy
Although the song was initially released in October 2023, it went viral in November, with thousands of users claiming it sounded better than Bad Bunny’s latest studio album.[4] The song was removed from Spotify and Apple Music shortly after going viral, reportedly at the request of Bad Bunny.
The music video, published on YouTube, quickly amassed over 20 million views.[5] At its peak, the track had 10 million streams on Spotify. Several public figures supported the track and the use of AI in music, including Manuel Turizo, Omar Montes, Kenia OS, Joel De León (formerly member of CNCO), Dominic Lipa, Bad Gyal, and Ozuna.
Bad Bunny posted the following message in his WhatsApp broadcast channel:
"If you like that shitty song that’s going viral on TikTok, leave this group now. You don’t deserve to be my fans, and that’s exactly why I made the new album — to get rid of people like you. So bye, bye."
In response, FlowGPT publicly addressed the artist:
"You seem a bit angry," he said addressing Bad Bunny. "That was never my intention… I'm a big fan of your work. My algorithm loves learning from your music."[7]
MauryCeo claims to have offered the rights to Bad Bunny so he could perform the song live, but the artist refused and requested the track be taken down. The Chilean producer has stated that he is aware of the legal ambiguity:
"I did my research because I know I’m good, and someday one of my songs could blow up. But nobody really knows what to do. This is totally new — even the best lawyers are unsure. Judges don’t even know how to handle it."
Bad Bunny is not the first artist to criticize AI-generated music. Drake and The Weeknd have also spoken against it, while other artists, like Grimes, have embraced it — launching her own AI vocal platform, Elf.Tech.[8]
FlowGPT
Mauricio Bustos, known as MauryCEO, is a 30-year-old Chilean producer.[8] While the voices used in his tracks are AI-generated, the name “GPT” in FlowGPT humorously stands for "Generador Preentrenado de Temazos" (“Pretrained Generator of Hits”). *NostalgIA* is the fifth AI-powered demo released by the artist.[1]
