Nostrum is a Catalan fast food company,  owned by its parent company Home Meal Replacement S.L., with its address at Pol. Ind Les Vives, s/n de Sant Vicenç de Castellet (Barcelona).[1] It was founded by Joan Salomo and his son Quirze Salomo, the latter being the current director of the company. The company is characterized by its low costs, and currently operates in 3 countries, France, Andorra and Spain. Nostrum currently has 108 stores in Catalunya, 11 in Madrid, 1 in Aragon, 1 in Valencia, 4 in the Basque Country, 2 in Andorra and 13 in France.[2]

History[edit]

The first Nostrum store was opened on Calle Lluria, in the city of Barcelona around June 1999.[3]

It wasn’t until 2012 that Nostrum decided to take a new business route.[4] After making this decision, Nostrum began developing a strategy which consisted of offering its products at a very lower cost of €1, €2 or €3 to the end consumer. This strategy has allowed the company to double its sales and has allowed to increase the turnover by 60% (compared to 2011).

These actions also encouraged Nostrum to continue its growth through becoming a franchisor. Nowadays, Nostrum continues to be a franchisor and gets an entry fee of around €28.000[5] from each new franchisee entering the take-out market.[6]

In 2013, Nostrum had a turnover of €13.6 million, which is almost double the turnover in 2012 and above that, received benefits of €700,100.[7]

Entering the Stock exchange[edit]

In October 2014, owning around 115 stores, Nostrum started to spread news about the plans of their parent company, Home Meal Replacement, which was planning to enter into the stock exchange in order to raise the €5 million they needed to implement their strategic plan which consisted of gaining a stronger presence in Spain and to expand itself into Europe.[8] The stock sale started on 4th December 2014 in the Mercado Alternativo Borsatil (MAB) with the price of €1.73 per share, which was immediately re-evaluated to being 17.34% higher - €2.03 per share.[8] That year, Nostrum would make losses of €162,133.

In March 2015, Nostrum announced about a new capital increase capped at €3.5 million in order the finance the companies expansion plans. As a result of this, €3.6 millions were raised.[9] Throughout 2015 the company will open a total of 20 new stores reaching the 135 stores that it currently owns.

During its entry to the stock market in 2014, Nostrum achieved an overall increase of 22.54% in the price of its shares resulting in €2.12 per share. From the beginning of the sale, there was a stable increase in price of the share, which allowed nostrum to fit into the MAB rules, according to which the minimum price is €2 per share and the maximum is €2.25 per share (according to the last MAB control on 11/12/2015). Currently, Nostrums shares are valued at €2.23 per share. Nostrums market capitalization went from being €24,808, on the first day of its entry to the alternative stock market, to being the €31,613 it is today.[10]

International Expansion[edit]

Nostrum anticipates that the sale of shares on the stock market will allow Nostrum to expand itself into new international markets. According to Quirze Salomo, all the markets which are within the range of 2500 kilometers from the Iberic Peninsula are the target of this expansion, however the specific criteria for targeting markets within that range have not yet been specified. Nostrum is currently carrying out studies to determine the possibilities which are offered by the different markets within range. Some of the countries Nostrum is currently actively researching are France, Germany and Belgium.[11]

In September 2015, a home delivery system was announced through which users could order food to be brought home through the use of an application.[12]

Turnover[edit]

  • 2012: €7.2 millions
  • 2013: €14 million
  • 2014 : €13.3 million

Human Resources[edit]

The company has around 500 workers, 130 of whom work in factory located in Sant Vicenç de Castellet and 300 of whom work in the franchises.[13] As the acting director Quirze Salomo has said in 2014, the company plans to double the workforce in the nest 2 to 4 years. In this plan, out of the 130 new employees, some are to become cooks who prepare the products, some will work on the packaging of the product, some which will work in the new and experimental cooking sector and some who will be in charge of the distribution of the final product to the stores.
