The website Notebookcheck, which specializes in hardware testing, has been publishing reviews of laptops since 2005 and increasingly of smartphones and tablets since 2013. The online offering is currently published in 13 different languages under various top-level domains. In addition to hardware reviews, the website also offers a news section and articles about software and hardware. The aim is to provide a profound overview of the market for mobile computers, smartphones, and tablets.
The portal is operated and published by Vienna-based Notebookcheck Publishing GmbH, whose managing Directors are Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Klaus A. Hinum, Stefan Hinum and Dipl.-Ing. J. Simon Leitner the three founders of the portal.
History[edit]
At the beginning of 2005, the three Austrian founders decided to create a comprehensive database on the performance of mobile PCs due to a lack of alternatives on the European market. One year later the website was extended to 7 languages including English.[1]
In 2007, the Notebookcheck Publishing GmbH was founded and the company was registered at the Commercial Court of Vienna to become the carrier of the editorial activities.[2]
By 2015, six additional languages were added to the offering and an extensive network of more than 60 freelance contributing editors worldwide was created. In the same year, the current design for the portal was developed. By the end of the year, Notebookcheck reached 14th place in the t3n ranking of Germany’s most important tech media.[3][1]
Since 2020, the servers used by Notebookcheck have been powered by green electricity only.[1][4]
Content[edit]
In addition to the hardware reviews, the website also offers access to the latest industry news, long-form articles on selected topics, an automated buyers guide, and a library where readers can find laptop reviews in several languages from external sources.
Reviews[edit]
Notebookcheck's hardware reviews are standardized in terms of measurements performed and structure. The general information about the device under scope is followed by sections about the case, connectivity, input devices, display, performance, emissions, energy consumption, battery life, and a short rating including a verdict. All devices are tested individually but comparable due to the standardization. So top listings are created based on the rating points awarded.[5]
The scope of information in the tests is aimed more at experienced users due to the many measurements provided. However, most of the information relevant is presented in easy to understand text form. The extensive database also makes it possible to compare the measured values, such as size, energy consumption, battery performance, and system benchmarks with many other devices.
In addition to the internal reviews, Notebookcheck also collects links to reviews from external providers. Thus, more than 5,000 internal and 40,000 external test reports can be found via the offer.
The devices tested by Notebookcheck are either purchased by the editorial team or provided by various providers such as manufacturers or retailers. Loaned devices are returned to the loaner after the test work is completed.
Buyers Guide[edit]
Preferences for a searched device can be specified via input fields. Based on the test database, a selection of devices matching the selected parameters is displayed.
digital circulation[edit]
Noteboockcheck is available in 13 different languages including German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Swedish, Mandarin, and Hungarian. With up to 10 million page views per month, the English website has the highest range[6], followed by German[7] and Russian.
Internationally the various language sections reach a combined average of 15.5 Million page views per month.
Editorial office[edit]
The editorial office of Notebookcheck is decentralized and consists of freelancers. The editorial team is led by Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Klaus A. Hinum, Stefan Hinum and Dipl.-Ing. J. Simon Leitner. In central Europe around 30 freelance contributing editors working for Notebookcheck, worldwide more than 70 contribunting editors and translators. There are no permanent employees in the editorial office, this also results from the worldwide distribution of the contributors.
