Notmuch is an email indexing and searching program,[2] inspired by Sup.[3] It is free software, and has received in-depth coverage in LWN.net.[4][5][6]

    Adoption[edit]

Many people recommend Notmuch as a means to read email at a computer terminal.[7] It is used by several prominent Debian developers.[8]

    User interfaces and workflow[edit]

Notmuch has a command-line interface. Other user interfaces are, optionally, available via GNU Emacs,[4][5][6] Vim,[5] Mutt, or via a Web interface hosted on the user's computer.[5]

Unlike traditional, folder-based email workflows, Notmuch encourages an email workflow based on searching and tagging.[4][5][6]
