Ethan Reyes (January 17, 2008 – July 9, 2022), known professionally as Notti Osama, was an American rapper based in New York. Reyes was the brother of DD Osama, JStar Balla, JayKlickin, and Melz.[1][2] Reyes's music was in the style of Drill rap. Reyes died from a stabbing on July 9th, 2022, which led to popularity on his first posthumous song Dead Opps.[1]

Early life

Ethan Reyes was born on January 17, 2008, in New York City.[3] Reyes grew up without a strong father figure, living mainly with his mother. Reyes's brother, JStar Balla, started releasing music in the beginning of 2020,[4] which tempted him to release music. Reyes was affiliated with the gang OY (Original Youngsters of New York).

Career

In 2021, Reyes released his debut song along with his brother David and fellow rapper Blockwork called "Aftermath".[5] Later that year he appeared on the song EVIL TWINS by Sugarhill Ddot.[6] In 2022, the song Too Tact was released on the Raps and Hustles YouTube Channel,[7] giving Reyes his first taste of fame. Later that year he created his Instagram account, and his first post was an edit of Reyes, JJ 6ix, and Reyes's brother DD lip syncing to their song Blame On Me. In June 2022, the songs Without You and PARTY IN THE U.S.A were released, both featuring DD Osama. Most of Reyes's music was released posthumously. Following his death, Dead Opps and Evil Twins pt. 2 were released.

Personal life

Reyes's music met with controversy for some of its subjects, such as smoking blunts and gang violence.

He was living in Harlem, New York, at the time of his death, with his brothers JayKlickin and DD Osama.[8]

Death

At around 3:00 PM EST, Reyes spotted Kelvin Martinez – a 15-year-old gang member who was part of D.O.A, a rival gang opposing OY,[9] the gang Reyes was in. At the time of seeing Martinez, Reyes was with JJ 6ix – a fellow rapper and a friend of Reyes – and another undisclosed gang member who was not charged with anything.[3] Reyes reportedly walked up to Martinez and attempted to beat him with a broomstick. Martinez attempted to run into the 137th Street–City College station while Reyes was still attacking him. Martinez was cornered as Reyes kept beating him, and Martinez ended up taking out a knife and stabbing Reyes once in the hip, which made Reyes aggressive. He reportedly attempted to throw Martinez on the train tracks.[10] Reyes started feeling nauseous, so he attempted to run out of the station. In the rush, he passed out on the stairs. He was escorted to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.[11] A video of Reyes being carried out of the station is available on the internet today. No photo or video of Reyes attacking Martinez is available to the public today. Martinez was initially charged with second-degree murder. The charge was downgraded to first-degree manslaughter after prosecutors learned that Reyes had cornered Martinez and confronted him with a broomstick and that Martinez was outnumbered by Reyes and his crew. [12]

According to an interview with Reyes's brother, David, Reyes and his brother and "a few other people" were walking along the streets when David decided to go home. Reyes was happy and relaxed when David decided to leave, and that was the last time that David saw his brother. Rappers who were friends with Reyes up to the time of his death dedicate lyrics to remembering and commemorating Reyes.

Legacy

Ten days after Reyes's death, the song E4N (Everything 4 Notti) was published on DD Osama's official YouTube channel. [13] This brought awareness to the situation as many drill fans were now learning of his passing. Famous artist Edot Baby, who hadn't collaborated with either Reyes or DD previously, appeared on the song.

In Reyes's songs he mocks the names of his dead rivals, due to this, he is not respected by many outside of his gang and supporters of his gang. On October 7, 2022, the song Notti Bop was published, making Reyes's death even more viral. [14] The Notti Bop mocks how Notti got stabbed in his hip and also a popular conspiracy theory was that Notti was a sacrifice to get his brother, DD, famous. In response to the song, DD published 2 songs, Back to Back and Notti Gang, both of which feature aggressive lyrics toward rival gangs.

On October 19, 2022, the song Letter 2 Notti was teased on Reyes's Instagram. It was later published on November 1.[15] The song features lyrics about DD's reaction to Reyes's death and how he is affected by it today. On February 3, 2022, Sugarhill Ddot would publish his own version of the song explaining how he was affected by Reyes's death.[16]
