Novel is an audio production company, founded in 2019, focused on creating narrative podcasts. Novel is headquartered in London, England.[1]

History[edit]

In 2016, the company was incorporated as SPG Productions, the initials of the Founder, and for a few years only employee, Sean Glynn.[2] In 2019, SPG Productions relaunched as Novel, once Max O'Brien had partnered with Glynn as Chief Content Officer.[3] The following year, Matt O'Mara, ex CEO of VICE UK, joined as an advisor and later as partner and Managing Director.[4] The stated goal of Novel is to shape the audience's relationship with the coming landscape of audio.[5]

In 2021, Novel announced a partnership with IHeartMedia to release a slate of 11 shows across over three years.[6][7][8] The first three of this slate have since been released, starting with their flagship show, The Assault on America,[9] investigating the Capitol insurrection.[10] In March 2022, The Superhero Complex was announced[11] and released in April, which tells the story of American real-life superhero Phoenix Jones.[12][13] Most recently, Novel ventured into true crime, investigates the story of Ervil LeBaron in Deliver Us From Ervil.[14] The company have since produced for a number of shows with Wondery,[15][16] Spotify[17] and more, including ARIAs winning[18] Harsh Reality: The Story of Miriam Rivera.[19][20][21][22]

In March 2021, Novel launched the first of their original shows with the Shon Faye hosted Call Me Mother[23], exploring the life stories of queer trailblazers.[24][25] Call Me Mother came back for a second season in June 2022.[26] Also in 2022, Julie Shapiro[27] joined Novel as their Executive Creative Director to expand their original show slate.[28]

People[edit]

In 2021, ex-Vice UK CEO Matt O'Mara joined Novel as their managing director.[29]

As of 2022 Novel have begun to expand into the US by striking a new partnership with UTA and hiring Today in Focus executive producer Mythili Rao as the company's Managing Editor, as well as Austin Mitchell who moved from his role as The Daily's Senior Audio Producer into Novel as Creative Director.[30][31]

Later that year Julie Shapiro, VP of editorial for Radiotopia[32] & PRX[33] and executive producer of Ear Hustle[34] joined Novel in August 2022 as their Executive Creative Director to "help with Novel’s pivot to the U.S."[35]
