Novena are an English progressive metal band formed in 2013 by multi-instrumentalist Harrison White, bassist Matthew ‘Moat’ Lowe, guitarist Dan Thornton, and drummer Cameron Spence. The band was formed after the dissolution of White and Lowe’s previous band, Bleeding Oath.[1], and officially began with the recruitment of Haken vocalist Ross Jennings and Slice the Cake vocalist Gaia Mason in 2015[2] for their debut EP, Secondary Genesis. To date, the band has released one studio album, two EPs, one live EP, and one single.

History[edit]

Early Years[edit]

Harrison White and Moat Lowe grew up together in London, attending the same school. They first performed together as founding members of the high school progressive metal band, Dymension[3], in 2009. This dissolved soon after Lowe joined White’s other band, Bleeding Oath in 2011. White and Lowe remained members of Bleeding Oath until the band’s breakup in 2013. Shortly after this, Lowe and White announced the formation of Novena, along with an upcoming 32-minute EP that had been written shortly before Bleeding Oath’s split. This would go on to become the band’s debut EP, Secondary Genesis.

Secondary Genesis[edit]

Lowe and White would meet drummer Cameron Spence and guitarist Dan Thornton at BIMM Brighton in 2013, who joined the band at this time. In 2015, after struggling to find permanent vocalists, Ross Jennings of Haken and Gaia Mason of Slice the Cake were invited to perform the vocal parts on the recording of Secondary Genesis as session musicians. A positive recording experience led to Jennings being invited to join the band permanently. The EP featured three songs and was released on 22 July 2016. It was generally and critically well-received[4][5][6]

Novena performed a small number of shows in support of Secondary Genesis. Their debut performance was at UK Tech-Metal Fest in 2016, opening the main stage for Animals as Leaders. During this time, members of the band would be unable to make many shows due to other commitments, and other musicians would deputise for them. These musicians included Ray Hearne of Haken, Mike Malyan of Monuments, Dave Mac of The Sun Explodes, and William Alex Young of Defences.

Eleventh Hour[edit]

Writing for Eleventh Hour began immediately after the release of Secondary Genesis[7] and would continue for several years until its eventual release on March 6, 2020, on Frontiers Records [8][8]. It was during this time that vocalist Gaia Mason joined the band as a permanent member. The album was critically well received, including winning ‘debut album of the year’ accolades from both The Prog Space[9] and the Prog Metal Subreddit r/progmetal[10].

An album launch show in support of the album release was cancelled due to the first wave of COVID-19 lockdowns, being postponed three times, and finally taking place on 31st October 2021.[11]

The Stopped Clock & Live From Home[edit]

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Novena released two EPs: ‘The Stopped Clock,’ featuring two new original tracks and a cover of Billie Eilish's 'bury a friend'; and ‘Live from Home,’ featuring a compilation of ‘Live’ versions of their songs from online festivals, as well as an acoustic version of ‘Disconnected’ from their previous album.

‘The Stopped Clock’ was written as both a prequel and sequel to ‘Eleventh Hour,’ creating an ‘eternal time loop’[12] where the album and EP could be listened to cyclically.

Ghosts & Departure of Gaia Mason[edit]

During the rehearsals for their album launch show, Novena released a video announcing the departure of Gaia Mason from the band on amicable terms, with the upcoming performance being their last.[13]

Soon after, Novena announced open auditions for a new second vocalist on their social media pages.[14] On 19th June 2022, Austrian Vocalist Pipi Gogerl was announced as the new vocalist, along with a new single, ‘Ghosts.’[15]
