Novus Ukraine (Ukrainian: Новус Україна, romanized: Novus Ukraina; stylized as NOVUS) is a supermarket chain in Ukraine, founded in 2008.[3] It is owned by Consul Trade House UAB, a Lithuanian company.[4][5] The company is also involved in the importing and distribution of goods.[6] As of 2021, it is the 51st-largest private company in Ukraine, according to Forbes.[2] In 2020, it closed a deal to acquire all the Billa stores in Ukraine.[5]

On 20 March 2022, its company headquarters, located in Kyiv's Retroville [uk], were destroyed by Russians during their invasion of Ukraine.[7][8][9][10]

History[edit]

Novus Ukraine was established in 2008, and opened its first store during the same year.[3][5] Its first store in downtown Kyiv was opened in 2013, bringing its total number of supermarkets, hypermarkets, and shopping centres in Ukraine, including in Boryspil, Cherkasy, Rivne, Sevastopol, Ternopil, and Zhytomyr, to 27.[6]

In 2020, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development granted Novus a loan of 100 million USD to expand its network and build a new green state-of-the-art distribution centre in Kyiv.[11][12][13] Later in 2020, the Lithuanian owners of Novus, Consul Trade House UAB, purchased all 35 Billa stores in Ukraine from REWE Group for 100 million USD.[14][15][3][5][lower-alpha 1] At the time of purchase, the Novus network consisted of 46 facilities.[5][16] A further 12 to 15 million UAH was used for rebranding.[15] Novus opened a new distribution centre near Kyiv in early 2021.[17]

As of 2021, it is the 51st-largest private company in Ukraine, and amongst the 15 largest private retailers in Ukraine, according to Forbes.[2][18]

During the first week of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Novus was one of a number of Ukrainian supermarket chains to stop carrying Coca-Cola products due to its decision to continue operations in Russia despite the boycott of Russia due to the invasion.[19][20] Novus also partnered with the Ukrainian Red Cross to provide food for those in need in Kyiv.[21]

On 20 March 2022, the company headquarters, located in the business centre of Retroville [uk] in Kyiv's Podilskyi District, was "almost completely destroyed" when Russians bombed the centre during their invasion of Ukraine.[7][8][9][10][lower-alpha 2] Their flagship supermarket, located in Retroville's shopping centre, was also affected, and suffered collapsed ceilings and other structural damage.[9][23][10][lower-alpha 3]

The Retail Association of Ukraine [uk] reported that Novus had 16.0 billion UAH in revenue for 2022, making it the seventh-largest retailer or e-commerce business in the country by revenue that year.[1]

Notes[edit]

  1. LIGA.net [uk] reported that the deal would cost Novus up to 70 million USD.[16]
  2. Novus and Retroville are both projects of the Lithuanian investment group BT Invest.[22][12][16][9]
  3. At the time the loss of the headquarters was reported, the full extent of the damage to the flagship supermarket could not be determined due to restricted access to the site.[24][23][10]
