Nsikak John is a Nigerian graphic designer and social entrepreneur. He is known for designing the flag of Akwa Ibom, a state in Nigeria.[1] [2]
Early Life[edit]
Nsikak was born July 3, 1992 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua, Akwa Ibom State. He is the first of four male children of Mr & Mrs Emmanuel John. He grew up in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where he attended nursery and primary school. Nsikak started drawing at a very young age of five. His father took notice of his artistic talent and encouraged him by letting him create stencils of construction safety signs for his engineering company.
At the age of 17, after his secondary school education at Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, Nsikak started his design career as a freelance graphic designer at an advertising and design studios in Port Harcourt. This gave him great exposure to the works of Dieter Rams, Milton Glaser, Stefan Sagmeister and Pentagram. While working there, he was guided by Donald Okudu and Owhonda Nwokekoro, where he created event icons for Carniriv and the logo of Rivers State Tourism Development Agency.
He would then work for two years before gaining admission to the University of Uyo, Nigeria where he studied Civil Engineering.
Career[edit]
Nsikak started getting lots of attention doing graphic designs and branding in the University so he proceeded to form his design agency Kahn Digital Ltd. He has since designed branding, graphics and packaging for Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, AKCAROLSFEST and Yibo Koko.
In 2019 Nsikak entered a competition to create the official state symbols of Akwa Ibom and his flag was chosen. His flag design interpretation are as follows: Green represents fertile land and abundance, White represents godliness and peace, Orange represents vitality and vigour, and the white arrowhead "the charge" represents progress.[3] The flag was unveiled at the 33rd anniversary of Akwa Ibom State by the Governor, His Excellency, Udom Emmanuel.[4][5]
