Nyren Clunis (born 17 September 1991) is an English footballer who plays as a winger for Carshalton Athletic.

Career[edit]

Clunis had a trial at Charlton Athletic as a teenager[1], but ultimately began his career in Dulwich Hamlet's youth set-up at the age of 14, making his debut in the senior team at 17 in November 2009 in a 2-0 defeat to Burgess Hill Town in the Isthmian League Division One South. His first goal, in the same season, came against Fleet Town.

He was the top scorer for the team in the 2010/2011 and 2017/2018 seasons. Until his departure from Dulwich, announced on 30 July 2020[2], he was the club's longest serving player, clocking up a total of 485 first team appearances and 117 goals.

He became the first Dulwich player to reach 100 goals since Ossie Bayram in the 1979/1980 season when he scored against Lowestoft Town away in March 2018. He was the seventh player to do so since the Second World War.[3]

A "club legend"[4] and fan favourite for his long service and his scoring, Clunis was often referred to as "the king of Camberwell"[5] - a reference to the nearby area of south London - in a fan chant. He wore the number 7 for Dulwich.

His departure, in the summer of 2020, was attributed to coronavirus-related budget constraints by both Clunis and Hamlet manager Gavin Rose.[6] He signed for Carshalton Athletic in August 2020 ahead of the new Isthmian Premier League season.[7]

Personal life[edit]

Clunis grew up "on the cusp of Camberwell and Peckham"[5], close to Dulwich Hamlet's Champion Hill home ground.
