The OGAE Song Contest 2022 is the 37th edition of the OGAE Song Contest. It is being hosted in Australia, following the country's victory at the 2021 contest with the song "Fly Away" by Tones and I. Organised by OGAE Australia, the contest is being held online, with voting beginning on 9 September, and the results being announced on 5 November 2022.

Thirty clubs are participating in the contest, making it the second-largest OGAE Song Contest behind the 2015 contest.

Location[edit]

The 2022 contest is being hosted in Australia, following the country's victory at the 2021 edition with the song "Fly Away", performed by Tones and I. It is the second time that Australia has hosted the contest, having previously done so for the 2018 contest. The contest is being held online, with OGAE Australia planning on hosting a livestream of the results of the contest on 5 November 2022.

Visual design[edit]

The theme art and slogan for the contest, "Dreaming Together", was initially unveiled on 17 June 2022, when OGAE clubs became able to submit entries for the contest. Designed by Yorta Yorta woman and designer/illustrator Karen Briggs, the artwork represents a connection to the history of Aboriginal Australians and their land, culture, history and stories.

Format[edit]

The 2022 edition of the OGAE Song Contest sees a major change, as it is the first edition held since the vote of OGAE club presidents to end the OGAE Video Contest and merge it with the OGAE Song Contest. Further, the 2022 edition is the first edition to drop the language rule, allowing clubs to submit entries in any language, regardless of it being a national/official language of the club's nation or not.

The key eligibility criteria for submission are:

  • The song must have been released on an album or as a single on vinyl, CD or as a digital download, or as a video, no earlier than the start of the year prior to the Contest;[1]
  • The song must be an original version (not a cover or a remix);
  • The song must not include samples of any other songs;
  • The relevant song shall not have competed in the Eurovision Song Contest, Junior Eurovision Song Contest, OGAE Second Chance Contest or any related public preselections;
  • The video (if applicable) must have been released by the relevant artist;
  • The song and/or video shall be a studio version of the song, not a live recording or part of a film;
  • The performer must be an individual with the nationality of the nominating OGAE national club. For groups, at least one performer must be of the nationality of the nominating national club;
  • The song must be a maximum duration of 5 minutes. Videos should be no longer than 5 minutes, excluding credits.

Any submissions deemed ineligible by the host or any competing club is referred to the OGAE International Contest Coordinator for confirmation of its eligibility or providing instructions to the nominating club to resubmit a new entry.

Participating countries[edit]

OGAE Australia opened the submission process on 17 June 2022, with submissions closing at 09:00 CET on 29 July 2022. Special dispensation was provided to the OGAE clubs of Latvia, Estonia and Slovenia to submit their entries after the submission deadline. The OGAE clubs of Russia and Spain were also permitted to re-nominate another entry to the contest due to eligibility issues for their original submissions. OGAE Russia originally submitted the song "Masala-dosa" by the band Akvarium, which was deemed ineligible as the song had been released a year prior by the lead singer of the band. OGAE Russia were permitted to submit the song "DNA" by Leonid Agutin and Vladimir Presnyakov Jr.

OGAE Spain originally submitted the entry "Los 12" by Ana Mena and Belinda, but the song was deemed ineligible as it was determined to be a cover of the song "Mezzanotte" by Ana Mena. OGAE Spain subsequently submitted the song "Bajo la luz perfecta" by Varry Brava featuring Soleá Morente and Samuel Nagati.
