Oaksmith, also known as Oaksmith Gold International Blended Whisky, is an Indian brand of Whisky launched in December 2019. [1] Its parent company is Beam Suntory, which is an American company, subsidiary of Suntory Beverage & Food Ltd, which itself is a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan. Its headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois. It is the third largest producer of distilled beverages worldwide behind Diageo and Pernod Ricard.[2] Oaksmith Gold is also Beam Suntory’s first IMFL brand. Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) is the official term used by governments, businesses and media in India to refer to all types of hard liquor manufactured in the country other than indigenous alcoholic beverages such as feni, toddy, arrack, and others.

Oaksmith’s tasting notes are described as mild but full-body with woodiness originated from oak cask, on the nose it is fruity and sweet top note followed by a hint of smoke.[3]

Origin[edit]

The reason why it is called blended whisky is because it’s made by combining Scotch Malt whisky, American Bourbon, and is aged for at least four years in American Oak Barrels.[4] American oak tends to be more intensely flavored than French oak with more sweet and vanilla overtones [5] due to the American oak having two to four times as many lactones. The Oak barrels inspired the name of the brand and the round bottle labels. The packaging is a six-sided bottle with bevelled edges and a tall neck that’s a testament to its unique origin.[6] And the brand is available in two variants: Oaksmith and Oaksmith Gold.

Oaksmith’s parent company, Beam Suntory, says the whisky combines the “best of east and west in a bottle”.[7] This is because Oaksmith has been created by Shinji Fukuyo, chief blender at Suntory Spirits.[8] He is responsible for every bottle of whisky at Beam Suntory and is the fourth person to ever hold this position. [9] This is why the company says Oaksmith is a product of Japanese craftsmanship. Suntory was established in 1899, so to only be the fourth Master Blender is truly an accolade for Shinji Fukuyo. In Shinji’s words, Oaksmith is made by traditional Japanese craftsmanship to bring the taste of age statement Japanese whiskies to India. Shinji Fukuyo is also the creator of the popular Hibiki and Yamazaki whiskies.[10]

Japanese craftsmanship itself is a phenomenon in the whisky industry (citation). Japanese whiskies have received many awards in global whisky award platforms.[11] More importantly, Suntory’s Japanese whiskies have quickly become the favourite of whisky connoisseurs.[12] Japanese whisky is consistently ranked as some of the best across the globe, and in 2012, Yamazaki 25 beat 300 of the world’s single malts in an international blind tasting.[13] In Shinji’s words, “I travelled across the country to understand the different food cultures and flavours. Eventually what I saw, heard, and tasted, helped me explore a variety of flavour profiles and finalize this harmonious blend which has the best of America, Scotland, and Japanese craftsmanship. I am extremely proud as the final product completely reimagines what the future of Indian whisky can be”.[14]
