OceanMD is a Canadian healthcare technology company that provides integrated digital solutions for patient engagement and clinical service coordination. Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, OceanMD is a subsidiary of WELL Health Technologies Corp.[1] The company's flagship product, the Ocean Platform, connects patients, healthcare providers, and systems through secure, cloud-based tools that integrate with electronic medical records (EMRs) and other healthcare information systems.
History
OceanMD was founded in 2012 by Dr. Doug Kavanagh and Jeff Kavanagh. Initially operating under the name CognisantMD, the company launched the Ocean Platform as an EMR-integrated, software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution featuring a forms library and patient tablets. In December 2021, OceanMD was acquired by WELL Health Technologies Corp., a Canadian digital health company. The rebranding from CognisantMD to OceanMD was announced in 2023.[2]
Ocean Platform
The Ocean Platform is a cloud-based suite of tools designed to enhance patient engagement and streamline clinical workflows. It integrates with over 30 EMRs and health information systems using open, standards-based APIs, including HL7 FHIR®. [3]

Adoption and Impact

In August 2023, OceanMD signed a $38.5 million contract with British Columbia's Provincial Health Services Authority to provide digital services such as eReferrals, eConsults, and eOrders. This collaboration marked the third Canadian province, after Ontario and Nova Scotia, to partner with OceanMD for these services. [5]
In Nova Scotia, OceanMD's eReferral tool was implemented in March 2023 for the province's new single-entry intake model for surgical consult requests, aiming to improve access to care and streamline the referral process.
Security and Compliance
OceanMD employs industry-standard 256-bit AES encryption for end-to-end data security. Patient data is encrypted client-side, and encryption keys are managed by healthcare providers, ensuring that OceanMD staff cannot access unencrypted personal health information.
