Okaloko (also linked with Oshitambi) is a locality in eastern Ondonga, northern Namibia. In the 1880s the Ondonga kingdom split: Kambonde kaMpingana held the west from Olukonda, while his brother Nehale lya Mpingana held the east from Oshitambi / Okaloko until his death in 1908. Nehale is remembered for the 1904 attack on the German post at Fort Namutoni.[1]
The name is not the same place as Okalongo in Omusati Region, seat of the Ombandja Traditional Authority.
Royal seat
Lists of Ondonga kings give Nehale’s court as Oshitambi (Okaloko), c. 1885–1908. A later king, Eino Johannes Kambonde kaNamene, is also placed at Okaloko. Other historic seats include Oshamba, Iinenge, Omandongo, Onamungundo, Ondjumba, Ontananga, Omwandi and, since 2019, Onambango.
Eastern Ondonga faces Etosha National Park and Namutoni. The King Nehale gate and the King Nehale Conservancy take Nehale’s name. Land near Etosha styled Okashana kuukongo wa Nehale remains under the sitting Ondonga king rather than a village headman.
