Oleksandr Semchuk
Oleksandr Semchuk (born October 12, 1976, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian virtuoso violinist, teacher, professor, awarded by President of Ukraine with a State honorary title Merited Artist of Ukraine,[1] distinguished with "R.Rossi"[2] and "L.Spezzaferri"[3] Prizes of Honor (Italy) for outstanding pedagogical achievements; since 2010, he is a head of the String Department at Imola International Music Academy[4] (Imola, Italy). He has been mentioned in the press as the "Prince of Violin".[5]
Biography[edit]
Oleksandr Semchuk was born on October 12th, 1976 in Ivano-Frankivsk, in a family of musicians. He started studying violin at the age of 4 with Maestro I. Pylatiuk. At the age of eight, he performed his first orchestra concert as soloist. Among his teachers are Bogodar Kotorovych, Viktor Tretiakov, Yehudi Menuhin, Tibor Varga, Alberto Lysy, Nicolas Chumachenco and Yaroslava Rivnyak.
At an early age, Semchuk had won All-Soviet-Union Competition "Youth Assembly of Art" (Moscow), the Mykola Lysenko International Competition (Ukraine), the City of Gubbio Award (Italy) and many others.
Meanwhile, he began his career as a soloist with orchestra and with chamber music, collaborating with various musicians: Bruno Canino,[6] V. Sirenko,[7] Orfeo Mandozzi, Andrea Lucchesini,[8] Mario Brunello, Volodymyr Kozhukhar,[9] Konstantin Bogino, Michael Kugel, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Enkhe Baatarzhavyn,[10] Gabriele Mirabassi, Maxim Rysanov,[11] M .Diadiura, O Kogan, Rudolf Koelman,[12] D. Cohen,[13] Boris Petrushansky,[14] Kirill Karabits, Niklas Eppinger,[15] Leonid Gorokhov[16] and many others.
For a long time he has been the first violin of the "Sinopoli" String Quartet.[17][18][19] He actively promotes Ukrainian music in the world and is often the first performer of works by Myroslav Skoryk and Yevhen Stankovych.[20][21]
In duo with Anna Seredenko,[22][23] he has recorded 4 CDs for "JRC" Label ("Joint Recording Company", Ukraine) and more than seven hours of music as soloist for the National Golden Collection of the Ukraine, including the Brahms and Sibelius violin concertos.
He plays an Auguste Bernardel violin dated 1840 with the bows "White Lady" or "VENUS" by Navea Vera.[24]

- 2004–2006 – Violin Diploma at the Vienna Conservatoire (postgraduate study).
- 2002 – Diploma of the University of Paris Sorbonne, International Master-classes for string instruments and chamber music.
- 2000–2001 – Violin Diploma at the National Conservatory of Music in Lyon (third cycle, postgraduate study).
- 1999 – studies with professors Viktor Tretiakov and Michael Vayman at the International Academy of Musical Art in Neuilly-sur-Seine (France); in the same year he has been studying with the famous Maestro Tibor Varga at the High School of Music in Sion.
- 1994 – studies with Maestro Yehudi Menuhin and Maestro Alberto Lysy at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad.
- 1993–1997 – Violin Diploma with honors at the National Music Academy of Ukraine of P. I. Tchaikovsky, (Professor B. Kotorovych).
- 1992 – studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
- 1986–1993 – Violin Diploma with distinction at the Kyiv Secondary Specialized Musical Boarding School of M. Lysenko, (Professor B. Kotorovych, assistant Y. Rivnyak).

- 1995–2000 – Artist of the National Chamber Ensemble "Kyiv Soloists".
- 1997–2002 – teacher of violin at the Kyiv Secondary Specialized Music School of M. Lysenko, and at the "Glier" Kyiv Music College.
- 1998–2000 – National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments of Ukraine, at first as an orchestral player then as a soloist.
- 2002–2008 – senior violin teacher and assistant professor at Fiesole School of Music (Italy).[25]
- 2008–2010 – Violin Professor at the "DI.ES.IS" International Academy, Roma.
- 2008–2011 – Violin Professor at the Florence Music Academy.
- Since 2010 – Violin Professor and Head of the String Department at Imola International Piano Academy "Meetings with the Maestro" (Imola, Italy).[26]
- Since 2012 – Regular Violin Guest Professor at the State conservatories in Bologna,[27][28] Trento, Cesena and Reggio Emilia.
- 2016–2017 – Artistic Director of the String Concert Academy San Marino[29]
- Since 2017, holds master classes at the London Royal College of Music[30][31]
- Also, he regularly holds summer master classes in Paris (France),[32] San Marino (Republic of San Marino),[33] Kyiv (Ukraine),[34] Poreche (Croatia),[35][36] Rome, Florence, Mantua, Portogruaro,[37] Imola, Gubbio,[38][39] Potenza (Italy).[40]

Numerous Maestro's students are winners at various international competitions, have become concertmasters of renowned orchestras, and conduct their own active concert and pedagogical activities. Among them are such well-known young musicians as:

- Bortolotto Laura: prizewinner of 6 International Competitions, has performed as a soloist with Deutsche Kammerorchester Berlin, National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto and others;
- Brinckmeier Giulia: concertmaster of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra
- Broz Barbara: soloist, violin professor, violinist of "Trio Broz", "Sony" artist;
- Clamagirand Fanny: soloist, violin professor, winner of the Kreisler and Monaco Music Masters Competition;
- Huisingh Tijmen: soloist, violin professor, first violin of the Edinburgh Quartet[41], concertmaster and soloist of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Amsterdam Chamber Soloists Artist[42], Hyperion Records Artist;
- Kouznetsova Maria: soloist, prizewinner of International Competitions that include "Guang Ya Chengdu Competition" (China), "Andrea Postacchini" (Italia), "Manhattan Music Competition" (USA), David Oistrakh Competition (Russia), "Luigi Nono" (Italia) and Adriatico Music Competition (Italia);
- Laca Cecilia: soloist, violin professor, concertmaster of the Teatro San Carlo Orchestra;

- Misciagna Marco: soloist, viola professor, has recorded CDs for the Dynamic and for Phoenix Classics;
- Sciarretta Maurizio: soloist, violin professor, assistant of Maestro Zakhar Bron;
- Senese Francesco: soloist, violin professor, concertmaster of the Mozart Orchestra founded by Claudio Abbado in Bologna;
- Stucke Sven: soloist, violin professor, has made CD and radio recordings for RBB, WDR, MDRand SWR;
- Van Kuijk Nicolas: soloist, violin professor, first violin of the "Van Kuijk" string quartet.
Awards, titles and honors[edit]
Oleksandr Semchuk has been distinguished with different prizes and awards:
- 2014 – Rinaldo Rossi Prize of Honor for outstanding pedagogical achievements.
- 2013 – Laszlo Spezzaferri Prize of Honor for outstanding cultural achievements and development of the Italian violin school.
- 2002 – a honorary title of "Merited Artist of Ukraine[43]" for his personal contribution to the development of culture and the revival of Ukraine (President of Ukraine: Leonid Kuchma).
- 2002 – Diploma of Honor of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine for a significant personal contribution to the creation of spiritual values and high professional skills (Minister: Yuriy Bohutsky).
- 2002 – Diploma of the Academic Council of the NMAU of Tchaikovsky for his high artistic skill and significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian chamber music performances (Rector NMAU: Oleg Tymoshenko)
- 2001 – Diploma of the International Charitable Fund of the competition of V. Horowitz for a significant contribution to the development of musical performances (president of the fund: Yuri Zilberman)
- 1999 – First Prize and Gold Medal at the International "Città di Gubbio"[44] Chamber Music Competition (Gubbio, Italy)
- 1993 – Diploma of the II Prize and a Special prize "VIRTUOS" at the "Kloster Schöntal" International Violin Competition (Germany)[45]
- 1993 – Diploma of the laureate and a prize of Mariyka Pidhiryanka for creative achievements in the development of musical art (Ivano-Frankivsk oblast society of Ukrainian language named after Taras Shevchenko "Prosvita", chairman S. Shulepa)
