Oliver Chen

Oliver Chen (born 1978) is an Taiwanese-American retail analyst and industry expert. He currently serves as Managing director and senior equity research analyst at Cowen.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education[edit]

Chen stems from a Taiwanese family, his father was a political scientist and activist. The family owned a brassware store.[5] He graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration from Georgetown University[6] and subsequently obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. [7]

During his time at Wharton, Chen received the Jay H. Baker Retail Award for impact in retailing and co-founded the Wharton Retail Club. He was recognized in the Wharton School’s “40 Under 40” brightest stars alumni list in 2017.[8]

Chen is also a CFA charterholder.[4]

Career[edit]

Chen’s interest in the retail sector started, when he began working at his parents business in Natchitoches, Louisiana at age 7 / 12.[3][4]

Chen started bis career in JPMorgan’s consumer products/retail mergers and acquisitions group.[6] He subsequently served in the global mergers and acquisitions/strategic planning group at PepsiCo and in the investment research division at UBS. From 2007 – 2014, Chen worked as luxury analyst and vice-president at Citygroup.[9]

In 2015, Chen represented the National University of Singapore for the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report.[10] In 2014, Chen joined Cowen.[11]

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Chen is considered an industry expert and is frequently featured in various news outlets and is invited as a speaker and panelist at key industry events.[12][13][14][15]

He was recognized a top analyst on the 2018 and 2017 Institutional Investor All-America Research team and in 2019, was selected as a preeminent retail influencer and named on the National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation’s “2019 List of People Shaping Retail’s Future.”[2][3]
