Biography[edit]
Born in France, Olivier Staub grew up in Montreal, Canada[2]. Young and passionate about photography, he returned to Europe to learn his profession under the direction of his mentor, Michel Desmarteau, a pioneer of commercial automative photography[3].
Back in Montreal in 1994, Staub carried out major advertising campaigns for brands such as Cirque du Soleil[4], Volkswagen, Coca-Cola[5] and Nike[6],[7].
In 1995, Staub contributed to the Beauté Mobile exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts by photographing very rare vintage cars all over the world[8],[9],[10].
In 2004, Olivier Staub founded his own company, Staub Studio, an audiovisual production house that pioneered the vertically integrated model, offering a complete creative offer in the field of advertising photography, television advertising as well as web content and post-production[11],[12]. In 2007, Attraction Média acquired part of the company[13].
In 2010, Staub Studio merged with Films Traffik and 6ix degrés to form La Cavalerie, which quickly became the benchmark in vertically integrated advertising production in Quebec[14]. One of the flagship mandates of the integrated production model was the Rio Tinto recruitment campaign, which encompassed large-scale films, print campaigns and web content[15].
Known for his cinematic style and his sense of storytelling[16], Staub notably directed "37 Days" for Groupe Atlantic , an internationally acclaimed commercial that was shot atop a glacier. In 2015, the film won more than 67 international awards including 4 Lions at the Cannes International Festival[17], according to the Gunn Report[18],[19]. In order to carry out this assignment with the agency Leo Burnett Paris[17], Staub and his team heliported a glass cube weighing several tons to the top of a glacier in order to film a poetic resumption of life under extreme climatic conditions[20]. Subjected to light and heat inside the massive cube of glass, life seems to miraculously resume before our eyes in the middle of a white desert[19].
Staub also signed campaigns for brands like Pantène, which features the Project C Campaign, destined for the Asian market, in which a model confronts a Boeing 767[21]. The campaign generated 24.8 million views in a single day[22].
Involved in many humanitarian projects, Staub directed major films for Médecins sans frontières [23] and Humanity & Inclusion[24], the latter having been shot in collaboration with Cossette agency[25] in the Burmese refugee camps in Thailand[26] and awarded a Bronze Lion at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017[27].
A recognized figure in the advertising world, Staub is regularly published in international trade magazines such as Shots[28],[29], Little Black Book [30],[31],[32] and Campaign Brief[33][34]. Frequently called upon as a judge or jury president in various competitions such as IDEA, discipline Craft / Production (2020)[35][36], Marketing Awards (2018)[37], CRÉA (2017)[38], Lux (2015)[39], he is also invited as a speaker and panelist in events such as the Entertainment Management Conference in Montreal (2019), the Canadian Media Directors Council in Toronto (CMDC) (2018)[40], "L'édition des Lions de Cannes 2016" by Infopresse in Montreal[41] and "Les Lions de Cannes débarquent à Montréal" presented by the APCM network (2015)[42].
An enthusiast of wide open spaces, expeditions and especially of the great Canadian north, Staub simultaneously pursues his passion for wildlife and landscape photography[43]. His photographic works have taken him across the globe, giving birth to numerous series of unpublished photos such as "African Encounters"[44], "Herons, Mystic Birds"[45] which garnered several awards in various international competitions[46][47].
Today, Olivier Staub is represented throughout the world either in Montreal at Les Enfants[48], in Toronto at Someplace Nice TV[49], in Australia at The Producers[50], in France at La Belle Façon and finally in Asia, the United States and Great Britain by Great Guns[51].
