Omar I. Albanil (born January 18, 1990) is an American former undefeated super welterweight and middleweight professional boxer, current entrepreneur, boxing trainer and proprietor of Tampa City Boxing gym in Tampa, Florida.[2][3][4][5]

Early life[edit]

Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Albanil moved to Tampa, Florida with his mother at age 2.[5] From 1999-2004, Albanil lived in Mississippi before returning to Tampa and attending Alonso High School.[5] As a high school sophomore, Albanil's friends introduced him to boxing.[6] After graduating high school, Albanil attended Hillsborough Community College (HCC).[5]

Amateur career[edit]

In 2005, Sherman Henson - who trained boxers such as Antonio Tarver, Jr. (son of boxing great Antonio Tarver), Juan Laporte and Christian Camacho - began training Albanil.[5] Shortly thereafter, at age 15, Albanil began his amateur boxing career, losing his first two fights.[6]

In 2011, at the Mex Games in Los Angeles, California, Albanil won his weight class and was invited to the National Olympics of Mexico.[6]

As an amateur boxer, Albanil accrued a record of 27-5 while earning Florida state welterweight amateur boxing champion honors four times.[6][7]

Professional career[edit]

From 2011-2014, Albanil took a three-year hiatus from training and fighting, in part due to severe tendinitis in both his left and right shoulders, before embarking on his professional boxing career.[5]

On August 1, 2014, Albanil made his professional boxing debut, defeating Quincy Brown by unanimous decision in their super welterweight bout at the A La Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa, Florida.[3] Albanil continued on to earn victories (one by unanimous decision, one by TKO) in two subsequent super welterweight bouts before making his middleweight debut on July 31, 2015, in which he earned a TKO victory over Moises Hernandez.[3] On March 4, 2016, Albanil defeated Juan Fernando Raya by unanimous decision in their 4-round middleweight bout.[3]

On September 16, 2016, Albanil - then, a full-time HCC business student, restaurant server, boxing gym proprietor and professional boxer - entered the "Thunder on the Bay" boxing event at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Florida with the intention of his match that night being his last as a professional.[8] However, the event was cancelled shortly before the card's first bout after the boxing ring broke during a safety inspection.[8] After the Thunder on the Bay match cancellation, Albanil retired from professional boxing, transitioning into his career as a full-time boxing trainer, entrepreneur and business student of the University of Tampa (earning B.S. degree in Marketing in 2019).[9]

Albanil finished his professional boxing career with an undefeated record of 5-0 with two wins by TKO and three wins by unanimous decision. USA Telemundo broadcast all five of Albanil's professional fights.[10][11][12][13][14]
