Omar Daraghmeh

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Omar Daraghmeh (Arabic: عمر دراغمة‎; died on 23 October 2023) was a senior Hamas official. He, along with his son, had been arrested in the West Bank by the Israel Defense Forces on 9 October, after the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, and died while in custody in an Israeli prison.[1]

Hamas has called the death of the Daraghmeh in custody an assassination,[2][3][4] and accused the prison service of torture.[5][6]

Life[edit]

Omar Daraghmeh, 58, was from the city of Tubas, in the northern West Bank.[1]

Detention[edit]

He, along with his son, were arrested in the West Bank by the Israel Defense Forces on 9 October after the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.[1] The Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners’ Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners Society said in a joint statement the two individuals were placed under administrative detention – detention without charge or trial – for a period of six months, based on evidence contained in a "secret file".[7][6]

In court sessions before the Ofer Military Court, Daraghmeh had said to his lawyer, Ashraf Abu Sneineh, that he was in good health.[7][6]

Death[edit]

The Israel Prison Service first announced on 23 October that an unnamed prisoner born in 1965 had died after “feeling unwell and going to the prison clinic for tests”.[3] The incident took place at Megiddo Prison.[6]

Hamas accused Israel of assassinating Daraghmeh, a senior member of the group.[2][3][4] The group also claimed that he had died as a result of torture in the prison.[5][6]

The prison service said it was reviewing the circumstances of the death, and did not immediately respond to Hamas' accusation that it was a killing.[3] Israel later claimed that Daraghmeh died of a heart attack.[5][8]

Public response[edit]

Hundreds of Palestinians protested in Tubas in reaction to news of Daraghmeh's death.[5][9][6]

Wider context[edit]

Other recent Palestinian detainees have confirmed that they were "subjected to severe abuse and beatings" in Israeli detention,[7] including during their transfer to court or the rooms for remotely attending hearings.[6]

Israel has arrested hundreds of Palestinians from the West Bank since 7 October, and widely imposed administrative detention orders on them, according to local rights groups.[6] According to the Commission for ex-Prisoner’s Affairs, the number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons has doubled from 5,200 prisoners before 7 October to more than 10,000 prisoners and detainees.[6]
